Dropped a 3-2 OT decision to Columbus on a Seth Jones shot after Zetterberg's stick was busted by a slash and went uncalled.

When you suck you don't get the calls.

Ericsson is out for the rest of the season with a fracture in his right wrist he received in Detroit's loss to Washington Thursday. In other Red Wing news, Kronwall and Howard are near to returning to the lineup.

Nyquist's high stick on Spurgeon. Yeesh.

Forgive me if I'm mistaken but I swear this is the second time Spurgeon has pulled some punk-ass shit and paid the price for it.

That doesn't really justify the degree of retaliation but you'd think dude would've learned the first time around.

Yeah, that's an awful high stick/spear. And from a guy that you certainly wouldn't have expected it from. When I saw it I said at least 5 games and getting offered an in-person hearing(he's waived it for a phone hearing) means that it's more, I think. The cross-check wasn't in a great position, but you can't react by doing what Nyquist did.
The losses are mounting.

Mantha was a beast against the Wild. AA scored again and he's out on the PK.

6 games for Nyquist.

Maguire between the benches. Roenick and Milbury in the studio. NBC doing their best to kill hockey broadcasts.

I wish they'd have Milbury & Roenick get it over with and fight. As much as I don't like JR, I'd like to see him punch Milbury in the face, over & over. Or, anyone for that matter.

They're both terrible. I saw Roenick do one segment on Barbashev and he was just awful. Stumbled through the entire thing.

I was wrong. Maguire was on colour.

It seemed like there was a million commercials breaks in the third period.

Wings lose 2-0. Mad scramble looking to tie it up with the net pulled but nothing in the net.

Wings beat the Caps 3-2 in a SO. Then hand the Pens a 5-2 loss on the 2nd of the back to back.

Ott, Miller and Glendening's stat lines absolutely kill me when looking at Sheahan and Jurco's. Something something hockey gods.

Nick Jensen scored an absolute beauty against the Pens yesterday.

Zetterberg-Tatar-Mantha have combined for a couple of beautiful tic-tac-toes. Mantha doesn't like when people call his 2nd assists "noise".

Mrazek with 2 huge games.

They have been doing this all season long. They have a 4 to 5 game losing streak and then they follow that up with a 4 to 5 game winning streak. There is no rhyme or reason to it and the calibre of the opponent has no bearing on the outcome. I've been tracking it all season and the streaks are just who they are this year.

I'm not sure what's best for this team, but it might be to keep losing and getting a better draft pick.

If they keep winning and the vets on the long contracts actually play well, it could increase or create any trade value that they have at all. However, that can also decrease the likelihood that they will actually get dealt if Kenny decides that he needs to push for the playoffs instead of actually doing what needs to be done and tear it all down. That's the ideal - they play well and are able to get out from under some of the contracts. That, IMO, will outweigh the benefits of moving up in a weak draft.

If they are saddled with these bad contracts(which it certainly appears to be the case), and won't deal them anyway if they improve, then it might be best to keep on losing and get the highest possible draft spot.

Problem is the draft fucking sucks.

Keeping Smith would be great if they didn't already have Kronwall, Ericsson, DDK already signed.

Keeping Vanek would be fine if they didn't have Helm, Abdelkader, Neilsen, Glendening all signed until the end of time.

Either of those two would be fine to keep if it wasn't for the long fucking deals already on the team.

If they deal Green and Smith the defense will be a fucking shitshow trying to get the puck out of their own zone.

4. Heard through the gossip line that a few teams had reached out to Detroit about Andreas Athanasiou when there were some battles over his ice time. Red Wings GM Ken Holland wouldn’t comment, but another team indicated he told them not to even bother asking unless “a 22-year-old top-pair defenceman” was part of the conversation. The Wings have told clubs they are “open for business,” but won’t consider moving any of their young offensive cornerstones unless that kind of player is potentially available. My sense is the same goes for Petr Mrazek. Thomas Vanek likely goes (and could come back in the summer). They will discuss re-signing Brendan Smith in the next few days before a decision on trading him.

5. I’m also not certain Detroit will trade Mike Green. He’s got one year to go on his contract, and they need offence from the defence. He delivers. In fact, it’s possible they discuss a short extension, as he’s eligible for a new deal on July 1.

Can't see them discussing an extension now unless it's a gentlemen's agreement. If he's a UFA for the expansion draft he won't need protecting. Unless I've totally misunderstood all of that.

As we've seen recently, bad contracts(and giving Smith one that requires protection in the upcoming draft is that) aren't something that Holland is afraid of.

Interesting.

I would love to start a sports stats team that concentrates on identifying players who are either underused or used incorrectly, and finding teams where they would most benefit from playing. We should start it here.

Honestly I thought of Chicago as a landing spot for Jurco. Cheap and young with some skill for a team up against the cap. Low risk move. Disappointed to see him going, always thought we'd see more from him.

Getting a 3rd rounder is pretty good given what's transpired since his rookie season. But man...still waiting for him to put up 40-50 points.

And now that they've gotten trading away the struggling 24-year old, can you fucking start doing the real work now and work on dumping some of the awful, aging vet contracts, as hard as it may be?
