So our resident goaltending profile expert said that Mrazek was likely a top-10 goalie in the league, even though he was Howard's backup and wasn't seeing a ton of ice.

From Prashanth Iyer on twitter:
Quote:
Since making his 1st start 02/07/2013, Petr Mrazek leads the NHL in 5v5 SV% at 93.64% (min 2000 mins played, 59 G's eligible)

Went and grabbed the chart:

Mrazek's awesome, exciting, and his contract situation is becoming scary. RFA after this season and Jimmy is on the books for 3 more years at $5.3M. Wings also have a few guys to sign for next season.

Interesting. Howard's been below average the past couple of seasons, but if Detroit are willing to eat some cap and maybe take a contract back, some team with goalie issues might take a chance.

Unrelated: sometimes on American network affiliates for Montreal, they run ads for University of Maine with Howard in them.

Howard had a couple of stinkers lately that have brought down his numbers and Mrazek's taken over. He was good early.

I feel like the injuries that he's had the past couple of seasons have been tough on him. He's gone into stretches of amazing play, but then gets hurt. He's come back and been excellent gets hurt. Up and down, like most goalies, but he's unfortunately not on the best side of the aging curve with a top young guy now in front of him.

I don't think Detroit would trade him this season. It's Mrazek's first full season. Burnout or hurt? Who's going to back him up? Coreau isn't a solution. Would Carolina deal Cam Ward for Howard? Ward is bad and has been for a while but UFA at season's end. Detroit still doesn't really have an in-house backup solution for next season, but they can grab something from the market and Mrazek will hopefully be a 60-70 game starter.

Lots of teams desperate for goaltending help. Unfortunately St. Louis might be at the top of the list.

It's possible that they carry both until Howard's final year, or until his deal ends. Not an ideal cap situation by any stretch. With Holland being as loyal as he is, it's a possibility for sure.

2-year deal means Mrazek is RFA with 1 year left of Howard. That final year, if/when they re-sign Mrazek again, would be a very expensive season unless they buy out(still expensive) or deal Howard.
3-year deal means Mrazek is UFA at the same time as Howard.
8-year deal for $4M per.

Chris Osgood, on Red Wing TV, has been touting Mrazek as a very special young goaltender who could be great very quickly. Mrazek is distancing himself from Howard and is quickly becoming the Wings # 1 option every night. Personally, I think the Red Wings will keep the Howard / Mrazek tandem through this season's end. At the season's end, I think Howard will be dealt, or waived, as he appears to be starting to break down physically and mentally. A fresh start on another team may be what he needs to find his groove again. I have to agree with Osgood that Mrazek is a special young goalie and will be the Red Wings netminder of the present and future.

Jesus is Mrazek ever awesome. His wins aren't up at the top but his sv% and gaa certainly are. The advanced numbers love him. He's doing it as the starter, too.

Holland should be gettin' on the phone with Hextall right now to dangle Howard. Philly LOVES to overpay for mediocre goaltending.

Unfortunately he's already getting better goaltending from both Neuvirth and Mason.

Mrazek now leads the league in GAA and Sv%. He isn't high on the W and SO columns due to games played, but he should definitely be in the Vezina conversation if he wasn't already.

Well if the NHL GMs think that Jonathan Quick was a top-3 goalie in the league, we shouldn't have any problem unloading the rest of Jimmy Howard's contract.
