First update on the Wings 6th rounder from 2008, Stephen Johnston of the Belleville Bulls.

Quote:
The Detroit Red Wings were right — Stephen Johnston's nine-point rookie campaign didn't even scratch the surface of his potential.

The 18-year-old center has already matched his 56-game rookie output after 11 contests as a sophomore with the Ontario Hockey League's Belleville Bulls, with three goals and six assists in the young season.

Johnston, who the Red Wings took a flyer on in the sixth round (181st overall) in June's draft, had a pair of three-point games this week and has recovered from a sluggish start to post eight points in six games.

The 6-foot-2, 185-pounder is compared by the Red Wings to former prospect Shawn Matthias. He had two goals and seven assists last year in a fourth-line role on a deep, veteran team that made it to the Memorial Cup.

Some more updates:

Quote:
— Don't write off forward Gennady Stolyarov (Astana Barys, Kontinental Hockey League) just yet. The 6-foot-4 winger from Russia has blossomed since a transfer from Dynamo Moscow and has three goals and three assists in seven games. Stolyarov, 22, is a big Viktor Kozlov-type prospect who impresses the Red Wings with his skill but not his work ethic. He has never had more than nine points in Russia's top league, so this is encouraging.

— Forward Julien Cayer (Clarkson, NCAA) is another June draft pick who is off to a good start. The 6-foot-3, 186-pounder had a one-goal, one-assist showing in his U.S. college debut last week in a 4-3 loss to Niagara.

— Defenceman Jakub Kindl (Grand Rapids, American Hockey League) is finally in the black when it comes to plus-minus. After going an AHL-worst minus-34 last year, he has a goal, two assists and is a plus-2 in two games.

— Kindl isn't the only one doing well on the farm. Forwards Ville Leino (two goals, two assists), Mattias Ritola (one goal, three assists) and Justin Abdelkader (two goals, one assist) and defenseman Logan Pyett (three assists) are also off to good starts in the AHL. The Griffins have a 2-0-1 record.

— The Red Wings lost a prospect when Kyle Quincey was claimed off waivers by the Los Angeles Kings. They spent five seasons developing Quincey into an NHL defenseman, but ultimately didn't have room for him.

— Forward Darren Helm was called up to Detroit.

— Forward Dick Axelsson (Djurgarden, Swedish Elite League) returned from a shoulder injury and scored his first goal of the season.

Griffins are off to a great start. Ryno? Not so much...

Quote:
Johan Ryno's development has hit another major snag.

The big Swede's stock had already taken a massive tumble last season when he ditched scoring-line duty in the American Hockey League to be a role player in the Swedish Elite League. He hoped to regain his footing this year at Sweden's second level, but a broken leg has that plan on hold.

Aftonbladet reports Ryno re-injured an August leg injury four games into the season with AIK and could be out until January.

Based on that return date and Sweden's short schedule, this is shaping up to be another lost season for Ryno. He will have just one year remaining on the three-year entry-level contract he signed in 2007.

Ryno had a goal and two assists in four games with AIK. Last season, he had nine points in 30 games with Djurgarden in the Swedish Elite League. He also put up seven points in 12 games with the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins.

The Red Wings hoped for Jonathan Ericsson-esque strides from Ryno when they signed him on the advice of director of European scouting Hakan Andersson. Andersson has projected Ryno as a potential "top two line" contributor who could be an "impact player" with the Red Wings.

Here are some other notes from last week.

— Defenseman Max Nicastro (Chicago, United States Hockey League) is off to an awesome start, with two goals and five assists in seven games, tied for the league lead among defensemen. He will represent the United States at the world junior A hockey challenge in Camrose, Alberta, from Nov. 2 to 9.

— Grand Rapids is off to a 4-0-1 start, and forwards Ville Leino, Justin Abdelkader and Mattias Ritola have been a big part of that. Leino has four goals and five assists for nine points in five games, tied for 11th in the AHL scoring race. Abdelkader has six goals in five games, tied for third in the league. Ritola, meanwhile, has piled up three goals and four assists in five games.

— Forward Dick Axelsson (Djurgarden, Swedish Elite League) has wasted no time shaking off an early-season shoulder injury. He piled up a goal and three assists in three games this week upon his return.

— The Red Wings sent Darren Helm back to Grand Rapids. He appeared in two games with the Red Wings but did not record a point.

Gustav Nyqvist named hockey East rookie of the week

Quote:
ORONO, Maine -University of Maine freshman Gustav Nyquist (Malmo, Sweden) was named the Pro Ambitions Hockey East Rookie of the Week on Monday, Nov. 3 after scoring a goal and adding five assists in Maine's sweep of Niagara.

Nyquist scored Maine's first goal in 4-2 victory over the Purple Eagles on Friday. He then assisted on a pair of goals by Tanner House (Cochrane, Alberta). On Saturday, Nyquist assisted on a pair of goals by Chris Hahn (Fort Qu'Appelle, Saskatchewan) and one by Brian Flynn (Lynnfield, Mass.) to finish the game with three points. Nyquist had a hand in six of Maine's eight goals on the weekend. He earned the third star in both games against Niagara.

Nyquist leads Maine in scoring with two goals and five assists for seven points. His seven points are tied for the Hockey East lead in scoring among freshmen. He is tied for 10th overall among Hockey East scoring leaders.

Abdelkader named the AHL rookie of the month

Quote:
The American Hockey League announced today that Grand Rapids Griffins center Justin Abdelkader has been named the Reebok Edge/AHL Rookie of the Month for October. Abdelkader scored seven goals and added two assists for nine points in seven games for the Griffins.

Abdelkader scored his first professional goal and was named the game’s third star in his Griffins debut, a 4-3 overtime loss at Lake Erie on Oct. 11. He came back with a goal and an assist in a 4-3 shootout win over Lake Erie on Oct. 18, and registered a hat trick in Grand Rapids’ 6-3 victory over Norfolk on Oct. 26. Abdelkader closed out October with a third-period tally in a 3-2 overtime loss at Milwaukee on Oct. 31.

In recognition of his achievement, Abdelkader will be presented with an etched crystal award prior to an upcoming Griffins home game.

A native of nearby Muskegon, Mich., Abdelkader leads the Griffins and finished the month tied for second in the AHL with his seven goals. The 21-year-old forward was a second-round draft choice by Detroit (42nd overall) in 2005 and made his professional debut with the Red Wings last season, skating in two regular-season games following his junior season at Michigan State University. In three years with the Spartans, Abdelkader totaled 44 goals and 51 assists for 95 points in 124 games and scored the winning goal in the 2007 NCAA championship game.

I think this kid will very quickly become a huge fan favorite in Detroit. A local kid who can fly, and who loves to hit and mix it up.

Prospects Update November 10, 2008: Ritola rising

Quote:
Less than two years ago, Mattias Ritola couldn't crack the point-per-game barrier in little more than a beer league, Sweden's third level.

The Detroit Red Wings, unfazed, signed him anyway, excited by his high skill level and hopeful his talent would rise to the forefront once they got him in the American Hockey League with the Grand Rapids Griffins.

It's looking like they made the right decision.

In just his second year in the AHL, the 21-year-old right-winger has emerged as a point-per-game player and a fast-rising NHL prospect.

Ritola is fourth in Griffins scoring with four goals and six assists for 10 points in 10 games along with 24 shots and a plus-1. He plays on a scoring line and both special teams and is evolving into a well-rounded player who has a chance at finding a role with the Red Wings in the next couple of years.

The 6-foot, 192-pounder had 22 points all of last season as a rookie. He also made his NHL debut much earlier than anybody ever anticipated, getting three games with the Red Wings and serving as a Black Ace in the playoffs.

One of the biggest knocks on Ritola since being drafted is that he's lazy and doesn't come to play every shift, every night. But he has improved, learning to compete, win battles and go into the dirty areas to produce offence.

Here are some notes from the past week.

* Defenseman Max Nicastro (Chicago, United States Hockey League) helped the U.S. win gold at the world junior A challenge. He had a goal and three assists in five games, second among the team's blueliners.

* Forward Ville Leino (Grand Rapids, AHL) was forced to put his drive up the AHL scoring charts on hold after being grounded with a bruised hip.

* Forward Evan McGrath (Grand Rapids, AHL) has been a healthy scratch four times this season, but he got a chance to win a spot back this week after the injury to Leino and had a goal and two assists in two games.

* Goaltender Jimmy Howard (Grand Rapids, AHL) could not finish Saturday's game because of an injury. His status is unknown.

* Defenseman Brendan Smith (Wisconsin, NCAA) blew up for six assists in two games this weekend, including a four-assist outing against Michigan Tech. He suddenly finds himself with nine points in nine games as a sophomore, making him one of the top-scoring blueliners in the entire NCAA.

* Forward Justin Abdelkader (Grand Rapids, AHL) was rewarded for his outstanding start with the AHL's rookie-of-the-month honors for October.

* Forward Stephen Johnston (Belleville, Ontario Hockey League) is back from a groin injury. He been sidelined for a handful of games.

Kindl making strides in his sophomore season.

Quote:
Jakub Kindl is looking like a first-round draft pick again.

The 21-year-old defenseman and former 19th overall pick of the Detroit Red Wings is showing signs of having a turnaround year as an American Hockey League sophomore with the Grand Rapids Griffins.

Kindl, who had an AHL-worst minus-34 last season in a rocky rookie campaign, has three goals and five assists through 14 games.

"All aspects of his game, he's taken up a notch and he seems a lot more comfortable with the puck on his stick and a lot more comfortable in terms of making passes," said Griffins general manager Bob McNamara. "There was a lot more uncertainty last year. He's definitely taken it to another level."

The 6-foot-3, 202-pound Jiri Fischer-type has seen more ice time than in his rookie year and has also shown more poise on the power play. He'll become the main man in Grand Rapids whenever Jonathan Ericsson graduates to Detroit.

Kindl was one of the best defensemen in junior hockey with the Kitchener Rangers in 2006-07, finishing as runner-up to Marc Staal for the Ontario Hockey League's most outstanding defenseman award. McNamara called higher confidence "a big part" of Kindl's improvement in the professional ranks.

"That leads to better passes and better decision making," he said.

Kindl was the first star in Friday's 3-2 win over the Hartford Wolf Pack.

* McNamara had this to say about Mattias Ritola, a forward with the Griffins who was featured in last week's edition of RWC Report.

"Laziness is not a factor at all. You know what? If I hadn't heard that before he got here, I wouldn't have known that about him," McNamara said. "In the time he's been with us, he's worked hard. His upside is probably a third-line guy but he can play the fourth line. He's probably going to play in the NHL."

Ritola, a 6-foot, 192-pound winger, has five goals among 11 points in 14 games.

* Ericsson is pairing regularly with rookie Logan Pyett on the blue line in Grand Rapids, while the top two lines are Ville Leino-Darren Helm-Landon Wilson and Mattias Ritola-Justin Abdelkader-Darren Haydar.

Wilson is a journeyman assigned to the Griffins by the Dallas Stars, while Haydar is a former AHL MVP under contract with Detroit.

The Griffins are 8-3-2-1, fourth in the North Division.

* Goaltender Daniel Larsson (Grand Rapids, AHL) has won his last two starts and stopped 46 of 47 shots, shaking off a couple of bad games.

* Forward Gustav Nyquist (Maine, NCAA) is off to a great start in the U.S. college hockey ranks. Nyquist continues to produce at a point-per-game clip, and currently leads his team with five goals and five assists in nine games.

Nyquist is tied for 11th in Hockey East scoring, second among freshmen.

* Forward Dick Axelsson (Djurgarden, Swedish Elilte League) had a four-point game last week with a goal and three assists, helping Djurgarden to a 7-0 win over MoDo. Axelsson has 11 points in 13 games so far.

Apparently McCollum has the eye of the powerhouse Windsor Spitfires

Quote:
Goalie Thomas McCollum has Windsor's eye, even though the Spits have made overtures for Owen Sound's Tyler Beskorowany.

Dec 8 RWC Report: Nicastro progresses in Windy City

Quote:
Max Nicastro has taken a step forward in his development as a sophomore in the United States Hockey League with the Chicago Steel.

The 6-foot-2, 189-pound blueliner has emerged as his team's top blueliner and one of the top defensemen in the league, logging big minutes and running the power play as he prepares to suit up at Boston University next season.

Nicastro, drafted 91st overall last summer, has shown increasing aptitude offensively, with three goals and eight assists in 19 games. He is ninth among USHL blueliners and on pace to double last year's totals.

"He's showing more willingness to jump into the offense than he did last season," said Red Wings amateur scout David Kolb, who focuses on the USHL and NCAA. "He likes to sneak in from the point and has a good shot."

The 18-year-old has also been getting the job done in his own zone, blocking shots and developing defensively under Steel head coach Steve Poapst, an NCAA graduate who played seven seasons in the NHL.

The Red Wings would like to see Nicastro play with more of an edge.

"He can be a physical player when he wants to be at this level, but needs to develop more of a mean streak," said Kolb. "His physical play has been too inconsistent this year, and he needs to learn to punish guys more."

Kolb said Nicastro spends a lot of his free time in the gym and that he is growing into his body and getting stronger. In the long run — the very long run, as the Red Wings are loaded with defensive depth and have plenty of time to wait — the Red Wings see the upside of an NHL regular.

"He has the tools to one day play in the NHL," Kolb said. "He just needs to develop the right mindset, and that should come with maturity."

Here are some other notes from the past week.

* Ville Leino's production with Grand Rapids of the American Hockey League is becoming a head-scratcher. Leino has no goals and five assists in his past 12 games with a five-game pointless streak and no goals since Oct. 25. Either Leino has hit a temporary wall or the transition to North America might not be going as smoothly as it looked after 10 games.

* Forward Cory Emmerton (Grand Rapids, AHL) scored the first goal of his pro career. He has 13 points in 22 games this season.

* Forward Randy Cameron (Moncton, Quebec Major Junior Hockey League) scored more goals this week than he had all season. Cameron tallied four times in three games and is now averaging a point-per-game.

* Forward Joakim Andersson (Frolunda, Swedish Elite League) has recovered from an atrocious start to the season. He began the year with no points in 15 games; but in 15 games since, he has two goals and six assists.

* Defenseman Brian Lashoff was moved in an Ontario Hockey League trade. Lashoff went from the Barrie Colts to the struggling Kingston Frontenacs in a move to bolster the Colts for the present and the Fronts for the future.

Kingston got forwards Colt Kennedy and Mitch Lebar, while Barrie got top goal-scorer Josh Brittain and Pete Stevens.

Lashoff, who signed as a free agent this summer, should get more ice time in Kingston. He has a goal and 12 assists in 28 games.

Wings to Dick: Grow the F Up!

http://www.redwingscentral.com/stories/2008_12/15_RWCReport.php

Quote:
If Dick Axelsson has any hope of one day suiting up for the Detroit Red Wings, his current work habits simply aren't going to cut it.

The 21-year-old forward was effectively kicked off his Swedish Elite League team this past week for poor on- and off-ice work ethic. Djurgarden didn't have the patience for him — despite five goals and seven assists in 18 games — and jettisoned him to Farjestad for the rest of the season.

The Red Wings, who drafted him 62nd overall in 2006 and are head over heels about his skill level, will be watching Axelsson's response closely.

"It doesn't matter if you're Henrik Zetterberg or Steve Yzerman or Dick Axelsson — if you don't work hard, you don't make it," said Red Wings assistant general manager Jim Nill. "That's why Henrik Zetterberg and Steve Yzerman have made it, and until Dick Axelsson learns that, he won't make it.

"It's a good lesson for him. We'll see how he responds."

The Red Wings built a Stanley Cup champion on hard work as much as talent. Axelsson, who chief European scout Hakan Andersson compares to a "more skilled version of Mikael Samuelsson," has the talent, with size, skating ability, soft hands and a good shot. But he's there one shift, gone the next.

The 6-foot-2, 176-pounder also had a documented incident last spring when he blew his chances at representing Sweden at the IIHF world championship because he reportedly spent a night in jail for "drunk and disorderly conduct."

"He's a young kid who's been living off his skill level," Nill said. "Trouble is, every level you go up, everybody has the same skill level or better. If you're gonna make it, it comes down to work ethic. That's how you separate yourself."

Djurgarden was the worst team in the Swedish Elite League; Farjestad is a perennial contender that is currently third in the standings.

Axelsson had an assist in his first game with Farjestad. He skated on the first line with former NHLers Rickard Wallin and Lee Goren.

The Red Wings signed Axelsson to a three-year entry-level contract this past summer and would ideally like to see him in the American Hockey League with the Grand Rapids Griffins sooner rather than later.

* Defenseman Brendan Smith (Wisconsin, NCAA) fell short in his bid to make Team Canada for the world junior championship. Smith participated in the team's selection camp over the weekend and performed well, but was edged out by a seven-man unit that includes Alex Pietrangelo and Thomas Hickey.

Goaltender Thomas McCollum will be a key factor for the U.S. at the world junior, while forward Joakim Andersson will star for Sweden.

The tournament starts Boxing Day in Ottawa.

* Forward Ville Leino (Grand Rapids, AHL) has seen things go from bad to worse. He has just six assists in his past 14 games and just one assist in his past seven contests. Things really aren't going well for Leino, who looked ticketed for Detroit early in the year after a sizzling-hot start.

* Defenseman Jonathan Ericsson (Grand Rapids, AHL) has been on the shelf with a minor shoulder injury recently, while high-scoring forward Darren Helm returned to the farm after a call-up to the Red Wings.

* Forward Gustav Nyquist (Maine, NCAA) continues to enjoy great offensive success in his freshman year. He has nine goals and seven assists in 16 games, tops on his team and among the Hockey East leaders.

Larsson to Jimmy: Gimme yer jerb

http://www.redwingscentral.com/stories/ ... Report.php

Quote:
Daniel Larsson is giving Jimmy Howard a run for his money.

The 22-year-old Swede has made a seamless transition to North America as a first-year goaltender in the American Hockey League, pushing himself into a timeshare with Howard in the Grand Rapids Griffins' crease.

Larsson, last year's Swedish Elite League goalie of the year, has been an absolute wall in his past 13 starts, going 10-2-1. He has three shutouts, a 1.77 goals-against average and a .944 save percentage in his last nine outings.

"He's really exceeded our expectations," said Griffins general manager Bob McNamara. "He's been very good for us. He plays a very simple style. He doesn't have a lot of extra movement in his game. He just gets out there and blocks the puck and he's very economical in his moves."

Overall, Larsson is fifth in the AHL in GAA (2.30), fourth in save percentage (.924), tied for first in shutouts (four) and tied for eighth in wins (12).

Howard, who has long carried the Red Wings' goaltender-of-the-future tag, is having a hard time fending off Larsson as a fourth-year pro. He still hasn't shaken his inconsistent play, something that has plagued him since he rewrote the NCAA record book in his days with the Maine Black Bears.

The 24-year-old has one more start than Larsson and is 9-8-2 with two shutouts, a 2.52 GAA and a .906 save percentage. He has been hot lately, posting two shutouts and a .952 save percentage in his past five outings.

"Both goaltenders are pushing each other and I think it's good for Jimmy that Daniel's playing well," said McNamara. "Daniel's made it a difficult decision every night for the coach in terms of who is starting."

Howard still has the best chance at graduating to Detroit next season, partially because he is no longer exempt from waivers.

McNamara said Howard had some tough starts in November and early December where "things didn't go well in terms of bounces."

"His numbers weren't great as a result and that plays on goaltenders' minds, when they look at the numbers and they're down," McNamara said. "But he's bounced back. He's played really well and seems to be back on track."

* Detroit's other top goalie prospect, Thomas McCollum, was the scapegoat for Team USA's quarterfinal upset loss to Slovakia at the world junior championship in Ottawa. He allowed four goals on 18 shots in a 5-3 loss.

McCollum started five games, finishing with a 3-2 record, a 2.83 GAA and a .860 save percentage. Backup Josh Unice took over in the fifth-place game and won.

It's a tough turn of events for the 19-year-old McCollum, who is having a tremendous Ontario Hockey League season with the Guelph Storm.

* Swedish prospect Joakim Andersson will play for world junior gold on Monday against Canada. He's been outstanding at the tournament, with a goal, four assists, a plus-8 rating and nine shots through five games.

* Evan McGrath's totals the past 19 games? Seven goals, 10 assists, 17 points. Ville Leino's? Four goals, six assists, 10 points. McGrath looked like a total write-off early this season, but he's played his way back onto the radar. Leino's gone cold again, with just two assists in his past five games.

* Forward Johan Ryno (AIK, Swedish Allsvenskan) has returned from a serious knee injury. He had a goal in one of his first three games back.

* Budding power forward (the Red Wings hope) Julien Cayer (Clarkson, NCAA) has two goals and six assists in 13 games. Not bad for a rookie in the college ranks, especially for a guy as big and physical as Cayer.

Thomas McCollum gets dealt from the Guelph Storm to the Brampton Battalion.

http://news.guelphmercury.com/News/article/425157

Hopefully he'll be between the pipes for the game where my brothers and I are doing the goalie races again. I'd like to see him at least once, and hopefully I'll see a couple more games as well. I'm only a 15 minute drive from the Powerade Centre.

RWC REPORT: Nyquist gets top marks at college

http://www.redwingscentral.com/stories/ ... Report.php

Quote:
Gustav Nyquist's accomplishments with the Maine Black Bears would be impressive enough if he wasn't a freshman and hadn't played his whole life in Sweden.

But when you throw those factors into the equation, it's easy to see why the Detroit Red Wings think they might have something in the 19-year-old winger, who crossed the pond this summer to further his career in the NCAA.

Nyquist, drafted 121st overall by the Red Wings last year, leads Maine in scoring with nine goals and 10 assists for 19 points in 22 games. Those totals put him third among Hockey East freshmen and 14th in the conference.

"It's very impressive, what he's done," said Red Wings scout Mark Leach. "First of all, stepping into a very good program, playing a lot, the top lines, the power play ... It doesn't happen a lot for a freshman in the college ranks.

"Then to adjust to the lifestyle and the game ... The rinks are smaller, there's more traffic, people are on him quicker. His adjustment's been excellent."

Maine isn't a particularly strong team this season, with a 5-6-2 record against Hockey East competition and a 10-9-3 record overall.

Leach lists Nyquist's best assets as his hands, hockey sense and touch around the net, and his biggest weakness his tendency to get knocked around. The 5-foot-11, 175-pounder has plenty of time at college to get stronger, and could fill a variety of roles if he develops into an NHLer.

"He plays both ends of the ice," Leach said. "He has the skill to be a possible second-line guy, but he has the ability to be the complementary third-line guy who is willing to back-check and play in the hard areas. If you have a skilled guy like him that plays on your third line, that's going to be a good thing."

AXELSSON ON TRACK: Forward Dick Axelsson (Farjestad, Swedish Elite League) has been productive since transferring to a new team. He has three goals and six assists in his first nine games and 23 points in 28 games overall.

D-LIGHT: Defenseman Jakub Kindl (Grand Rapids, American Hockey League) is fifth in scoring among AHL blueliners with five goals and 21 assists for 26 points in 42 games. Simply put, he's a new man this season.

HELM, RITOLA; HOT, COLD: Forward Darren Helm (Grand Rapids, AHL) has just one assists in his past six games. Teammate Mattias Ritola, meanwhile, has five goals and four assists for nine points in his last nine games.

NICASTRO HONOURED: Defenseman Max Nicastro (Chicago, United States Hockey League) was named USHL defensive player of the week. He had a goal, two assists and a plus-3 rating in three games the previous week.

And you thought me calling Price by his first name was confusing?

Haven't seen him at all this year, so I don't have any gut feeling, sorry. Sounds like Larsson is having a better season.

Doesn't look like RWC's resident in the latest OTP revision...
