Another year where the Stars come up just short. Problem is, they're not a bad team, but they're not great either. I have to give Nieuwendyk credit for being a guy willing to try just about anything--he certainly doesn't have a narrow vision of what makes a winner, though some might argue he hasn't really given this team an identity yet either.

Offseason needs:

#1 defenseman
#2 center
Shutdown forwards

Unfortunately a trade that should've worked didn't--Derek Roy for Steve Ott, but it appears the Ribeiro-for-Eakin deal did work.

This is probably Nieuwendyk's last shot to make the postseason coming up. I can't help but wonder if, once again, he didn't get the right guy behind the bench.

The best news though: New uniforms next year!

Um...never mind. Apparently Nieuwendyk is out NOW. Longtime Red Wings exec Jim Nill reportedly in.

The GM-to-coach departure rate this year appears out of whack.

Good. Now I can go back to rooting against the Stars fervently, which is good since they'll be division rivals next season.

The proliferation of the Wing model continues.

The Stars are victims of their own middling success: been a while since they've had a lottery pick. Decent draft record. They're not going in the wrong direction - they're just not building fast enough.

Chiasson was a late-season success story. Always liked his potential, even though he was a "too good for the Q type."

Lehtonen was a good flyer, actually.

Benn-Eriksson-Goli-Oleksiak-Eakin-Chiasson-Lehtonen isn't going to wow anyone going forward, but it's a start.

Disappointing to see. Nieuwendyk kept the team at least relevant during the upheaval of Hicks's downfall and purchase by Gagliardi, during which time he was helpless to prevent the departure of Brad Richards. He had more hits than misses IMO. Unfortunately, the misses that ultimately cost him his job were behind the bench.

I guess the idea of rebuilding without tanking is still widely considered impossible.

Anyone think Joe will replace Feaster in Calgary?

Well, here they are:

https://twitter.com/DallasStars/status/ ... 17/photo/1

Another very simplified look. Well, not as simplified as the last friggin' uniform, but very basic. Almost Whalers-esque.

Well, they don't look quite as bad as I thought they were going to, but I still don't dig the logo. And ENOUGH already with the fucking roundel motif, NHL.

Man, completely forgot just how much change has taken place in Dallas. Lindy Ruff (yeah, forgot he's the new bench boss) talks about Seguin moving to center, Benn moving back to wing, and other stuff...

http://starsinsideedge.com/2013/09/10/q ... ichushkin/

Yeah, it's a total fluff piece, but I felt like it was time to give the new-look Stars some love.

Hard to say how this team will do. It's pretty much new everything: New GM, new coach, new players, new division, and hell, even new uniforms.

I hope Erik Cole rebounds. The lockout really bummed him out, wasn't the same guy. Hope it's not a permanent decline as he's fun to watch. He's got the wheels to keep up with a Benn-Seguin duo.

Based on what I saw of the Stars for the first time this season against the Avs, they look like a markedly improved team from last season. Benn and Seguin bring plenty of speed to the

Cole I believe was on the third line. I didn't really notice him much.

Whitney's lost a step or two (and he wasn't that fast to begin with) but he's still a player.

Like the Avs, they got talent to spare up front, but that D is still missing some key components.

Looks like Ruff is goin' for broke and putting out a top line of Benn-Seguin-Nichushkin. I'd pay money to see that line. Not a lot of defense there, but since the opponent is Edmonton I don't think you need to worry.

Who needs a lottery pick when you can just trade for one?

Four goals for Seguin tonight. Drinks on him.

Sigh...

Lindy's back to some of the old habits that got his ass fired in Buffalo. Giving major minutes to meatheads like Ryan Garbutt (over 16 minutes in the loss against the Isles, and, SURPRISE, he was -2) while Valeri Nichushkin gets exiled to the 4th line (he got less than 10).

Defending Big D had a piece on how Garbutt, Roussel, and Horcoff get an inordinate number of offensive zone penalties. Frankly, for all the good Nill did snagging Tyler Seguin and Raptor Jesus Peverley, he really whiffed with some of his veteran acquisitions. Gonchar hasn't delivered, and Horcoff isn't NHL-caliber anymore. Add to that the fact that time may have caught up to Erik Cole and Ray Whitney, and you have a lot of cap space doing a whole lotta nothing.

Oh, and what's the deal with Oleksiak? Seems odd they haven't called him up with all the injuries to their blueline.
