Good stuff here. I loved the Stars' draft this year, it was comparable to the Habs in quality of each pick, although I thought the Habs went for home runs a bit more while the Stars made quality safe picks.

Ribeiro brought in a solid prospect in Cody Eakin. Derek Roy for Ott is an improvement on Ribeiro at C as far as playing an all-around game. Whitney and Jagr is an improvement on Ott for the short term at least in terms of offence and Whitney has played tough minutes for several years.

This team is Jamie Benn's team going forward. They have great prospect depth and they aren't intending on rushing those guys.

I can also vouch for Matej Stransky, their 5th rounder last year. He's the best Saskatoon Blade by a country mile, and I think he'll be a very good NHLer.

Nieuwendyk is getting it done the right way.

Hasn't given up vital first rounders in order to improve his team, signed core players to reasonable contracts (sure hope he doesn't break that trend with Benn though), improved his goaltending vastly by taking a flyer on Lehtonen, and best of all, doesn't have the stubbornness or ego to keep from admitting that a coaching change is necessary.

This is the GM Toronto is wishing they had gotten in Burke.

Forgot the Stars signed a couple very old men to play key roles on the team:

Eriksson - Benn - Jagr
Morrow - Roy - Whitney (man that's a small line)

No idea on the rest--I'm assuming Scott Glennie will have his best-yet chance to make the team out of camp. Hopefully Oleksiak makes the team and makes that tool Fistric expendable.

In other news, the Stars are ditching their boring NCAA-esque jerseys after this season:

And Benn finally gets re-signed.

5 years, $26.5 million.

I hope the ridiculous rumors of Burke replacing Nieuwendyk are just that.

I think Nieuwendyk's in a bit of a pickle. Good for him getting a decent D prospect in exchange for a broken-down Brenden Morrow, but he's got other problems now. I thought effectively replacing Ribeiro with Roy was a great move, but it hasn't panned out. And Roy will probably walk at season's end. Not a ton of great options to fill out that 2nd line center spot (Stephen Weiss?) on the free agent market, which kind of limits his options.

He needs to seriously upgrade his D and his center corps, and hope to hell Jack Campbell pans out long-term. Hate to say this, but the Stars should consider one dip in the tank, just once.

Heika doesn't pull punches, but still gives Nieuwendyk the benefit of the doubt.

I still think Joe's a great GM--got solid value for his trading chips in a market that simply makes zero sense right now. And as of yet he didn't have to give up anything that wasn't an expiring asset.

Wonder if Gulutzan gets the axe this offseason. If so, Nieuwendyk will likely be in trouble if the next guy doesn't get it done either.

I have no idea what's happening there this year at all. I thought they were a solid bet for a low playoff seed but Anaheim and Minny have gotten the luck draws this year, making it quite tough to get in.

Heika is right in that the team got a little too soft, especially on defense. Gulutzan also didn't get the most out of Roy and Benn.

Also, I don't think they'll get what they paid for in Goligoski until they toughen up that D. He reminds me a lot of Rafalski, and Rafalski was at his best when he had big guys clearing space for him. Maybe Oleksiak will be that guy.

If Cameron Gaunce turns into a stud for them, I'll be pissed.

Acquiring Kevin Connauton isn't going to toughen up their d.

No, nor is Morrow. Heika suggests that they'll parlay one or two of these skilled-but-soft defenders for something that addresses their needs. Apparently even Gologoski isn't untouchable, though I doubt he gets moved.

Goligosky would be on everyone's shopping list, I would think.

He's got a pretty hefty contract, not so sure many teams would bite.

Interesting, they're now trying to "Benn" Loui Eriksson. They tried him at center today at practice.
