This'll be the first case in a while (at least as far as I can recall) where a star player who still had some years left walked away due to serious health concerns, specifically concussions.
Coincidentally I looked up Ziggy Palffy today. He walked away at 33 and then came out of retirement in 07-08 to play in the Slovak league for a bunch of years.
Brett Lindros was a pretty notable one after only two seasons in the NHL. Wasn't a star, though.
Paul Kariya was 35 and probably still had some years left.
