Clusterfuck of stupidity, including the article title. Brutal, what his parents have done.

Wow. You're a grown man--why would you sign over all financial control of your life to your parents!?

This is really disturbing.

Quote:
Tina Johnson’s cellphone number listed in court documents is no longer in service. Jack Johnson Sr. has not returned several messages left on his cellphone, and several of the lenders have no storefronts or business phones.

Is JJ gonna be wearing cement shoes when this is all over?

No, the lenders are just legal predatory lenders we should get rid of as a society. Johnson will just have a Bankruptcy Receiver handling his financial affairs for a while. He's lucky. He's young enough to make a lot of it back later and keep his lifestyle. Reconciling with his parents is going to be a bitch.

That was partly my reaction, hence the stupidity all around comment. But he admittedly said he didn't know much about finance so he turned it over to people he trusted most - his parents. For a lot of people, that can work. For some people, Jack Johnson being one, it can turn out that their parents are shitheads. That being said, man. You make a shitton of money. Educate yourself.

Agreed. I could NEVER imagine my father doing something like this to me.

I do know first-hand what money can do to families though. It can make even the most sensible and kind person into a raging lunatic.

More pro owners and managers need to establish programs telling pro athletes the financial perils that await them. It should be REQUIRED before any athlete inks a lucrative deal. And cretins who creep around college campuses looking to "monetize" athletes should be arrested on sight.

That's what agents are supposed to be for. Johnson seemed to let Brisson negotiate his big money and then drop him for his folks.

He dropped Brisson back in 2008 while still on his rookie deal, before his 2nd deal and his current deal. That's what agents(and generally the professional services that accompany them now) are supposed to be for and most people realize that, but you're also supposed to be able to trust your parents. Some people will only listen to their parents and/or are unable to think for themselves at all. Turned out really badly for Jack Johnson.

Yeah, I don't get why we should be worried about pro athletes getting screwed like this, or that they don't have enough services or whatever from teams/leagues/etc on finances. Some people are going to make bad choices or get screwed by people they trust. That's awful, but in general agents and the like seem to give a lot of good advice. If a person voluntarily removes himself from the system like that then what can you really do?

It's sounds like something that the NHLPA would be the more appropriate entity to teach, a (hopefully) mandatory, financial education course to incoming players. This could lessen the occurrence of sad tales like this. I believe the NFL & NBA Players Associations provide these types of classes to incoming draftees. While more challenging at the NHL level because of the way players are brought in, it can still be done. I agree that if someone chooses to ignore all the good advice and behave stupidly there's not much that can be done.

On the NHL and PA doing something:
Quote:
The NHL and NHLPA now do a pre-season rookie symposium. Berard’s been there the last two years, telling the young players his story, advising them how to keep track of their money.

Echoing points we've made:

Quote:
“The biggest issue is that you have to educate yourself. When you’re young and you’re trying to make the NHL, the problem all of us have is that you don’t want to be bothered, because you’re focusing on playing. But the cheques are coming in. You need to take the time to understand.

“Can you read a bank statement? Do you understand a balance sheet?” he continues. “Stay liquid. Make sure you can get money when you need it. If everything is tied up in real estate deals, for example, it’s harder to access your money and easier to be defrauded.”

Money can help reveal the shittiest of character flaws. :steamingpileofcrap: What a clusterfuck of stupidity.

But he'll make $4.3 million this year and the next 3 years. So I don't feel bad for him. He had enough money to hire a real financial adviser and instead acted like he was handing over his paper route money to mom & dad to hold until Christmas. Fuck him.

Well, I think it's a parent's job to also teach children to think for themselves, right? Obviously you have to think JJ's parents didn't since it wasn't in their best interests.

In my line of work we see a lot of fucked up kids walk through the door. Almost always there's a fucked up parent involved.

Apparently Jack Johnson(the hockey player)'s parents(Tina and Jack Johnson) also ripped off Jack Johnson(Jack Johnson the hockey player's grandfather and Jack Johnson the hockey player's father's father).

Jack Johnson.

Quote:
Our sources claim that Jack Two was able to defraud his father (and son) without much effort because they all have the same full name—John Joseph-Louis Johnson—and because Tina had a real estate license and knew her way around the documents.

Shit, they probably already own a bunch of his stuff because they have the same name, Tina Johnson knows her way around real estate documents and you don't have to provide any fucking proof at all of who you are to just take someone's property, apparently.
