Johansen was hospitalized in the offseason with a heart issue. Now he's not playing for reasons unknown.

Rumor has it Jarmo is quietly fielding offers for Johansen. Someone on HF thought a Johansen-for-Jones deal with Nashville would make sense for both teams, but if Johansen gets the boot that's two franchise players now the Jackets tried and then failed to build around.

Lambert had a write-up on how the Jackets haven't really gotten all that much better under Torts, and in some cases, have actually gotten worse. The uptick merely points to the fact that their horrid numbers were unsustainable and were bound to, uh, rebound.

What's more alarming to me is that now Ryan Murray is sputtering badly. Don't know if injuries have already taken their toll or what, but this really is the Hard Luck Franchise. They simply cannot get a break.

Admittedly Jarmo's tenure has been a tad underwhelming, but fire him and then what?

Brassard for Gaborik might go down as a regrettable move.

Although their stats are similar and Saad is no slouch, letting Anisimov go might have been a mistake too.

Both Derick and Artem seemingly improved right after leaving, despite moving to better teams, which isn't a good sign.

Johansen for Hamonic. Columbus is closer to Winnipeg than NY.

Ryan Johansen is a healthy scratch tonight. From Hard Luck Franchise to Clusterfuck of a Franchise.

About the only thing Tortorella has managed to accomplish during his time in Columbus is alienate the team's best player.

Seriously, the only thing that improved under Torts was the play of Bobrovsky, which was going to happen anyway.

Nashville should be ALLLLLLLLLLLL over this shiznit if Johansen's available. And one way or another, he will be.

Johansen potentially on the market and Stamkos a possible rental? Swarm GM's! Swarm!

Rene Bourque tries to make an impact.

Unfortunately John Tortorella breaks a couple ribs as a result.

Awesome! I'll bet Larry Brooks had some great thoughts about this.

Well, if there was a "GM Watch," I'd say Jarmo would top the list, with Benning a distant 2nd. I'll be pretty shocked if he makes it to the expansion draft.

Filatov has some regrets about how his NHL career went down. Bolted for the K because he needed the money.

http://www.thehockeynews.com/blog/nikit ... hitchcock/

He's only 26, so if he can rebuild himself in Russia, maybe he'll get another shot.

This writ is more about the Avs and how they're seemingly interviewing ALL THE JACKETS for their HC job, but this little nugget from ol' Doug MacLean is too good not to post.

Quote:
4. The Blue Jackets had Kopitar No. 3 on their overall list of prospects in 2005. They had Brule in the 6-8 range. These lists are built off hundreds of games seen by scouts who travel thousands of miles to watch the prospects play. The list is burnished through hours of discussions and arguments among scouts. It means something. But when it came time for the Blue Jackets to pick, MacLean pulled the chute on drafting Kopitar at No. 6 because it would have been seen as unconventional. “I’m not drafting a kid who pushes rocks up a mountain and jumps over milk crates and calls it training,” he once bellowed. The Blue Jackets took the safe pick and were roundly applauded for keeping the ball in the fairway. But safe is death when it comes to drafting. If they’d faced the heat that day – Kopitar?!?!? – think of how it could have changed the organization.

My thinking is they would've floundered with Kopitar anyway and ended up trading him. But they still would've been in better shape regardless.

Anze probably put a Slovenian hex on these rubes. Explains the decade-plus of mediocrity.

Everyone's favorite power play specialist, Marc-Andre Bergeron, is back in North America on a PTO with the Jackets.

Best case scenario there for the Jackets. They don't want him out on the ice, and they can't buy him out healthy either.

Well, technically they could have if he was healthy

http://www.generalfanager.com/buyouts/620

It would cost them $20M to buy out his remaining $22M($16M signing bonuses + 6M salary) owed.

But yeah. If he's LTIR and insured, he likely saves them a lot more money than $2M and they can exceed the cap, rather than getting little to no cap relief from buying him out.

I wonder if General Fanager has every though about disabling the "Buyout this Contract" link on his player page. Might just be annoying to code it.

Why would they? That probably accounts for 1/3 of their site traffic. :rimshot:
