Nice interview by Dater on Erik Johnson.

https://www.bsndenver.com/bsn-exclusive ... iting-for/

It's behind a paywall so I'll post the telling quote here. Much as I try (and sometimes fail) to read too much into quotes, it's hard not to see this as a hard jab at a certain former teammate.

Quote:
“The character guys and the core guys in this room said ‘we want to figure things out here in Colorado,'” said Johnson, who scored one goal, assisted on another and logged nearly 28 minutes of plus-3 hockey. “The way things went last year, the easy thing would have been to say ‘it’s not working out, let’s go somewhere else, let’s jump ship.’ There’s still tons left to do and we’re still a long ways from a playoff spot and we know that, but it’s just another step in the right direction.”

MacKinnon gets the Duchene question and is a bit more egalitarian about it.

https://www.denverpost.com/2018/01/22/m ... e-culture/

Quote:
In what was supposed to be the last question, the Avs’ star center was asked if the culture of the team improved after Matt Duchene was traded to Ottawa on Nov. 5 in a three-team deal that netted Colorado seven pieces, including 19-year-old defenseman Sam Girard, who played his 32nd game with the Avs on Monday night against the Maple Leafs.

“It did a lot,” MacKinnon said of the improved culture. “There’s nothing wrong with Dutchy wanting to leave. I think it’s fair. He’s eight, nine years in this league and it wasn’t like a crazy breakup or anything. He went about it really good this season. But obviously we knew he wanted to leave. Now we have everybody here that wants to be here, which is great. If Dutchy was here I’d think we’d be in a good spot as well. He’s a really good player and obviously it’s nice to get ‘G’ (Girard) here. He’s a great defenseman.”

Avs would be in huge trouble right now if Sam Girard wasn't around. He's very similar to Tyson Barrie except he doesn't have as good a shot from the point, and is maybe a level above defensively. Barrie can't really run guys into the boards, Girard can.

Oh, and someone posted on Twitter something absolutely astonishing to me.

Avs: Last 10 games: 10 wins
Senators since the Duchene trade: 9 wins

Apparently the Avs are getting hit so hard with the flu that the training staff was setting up IVs in the locker room stalls between periods last night in St. Louis.

The All-Star break is coming at an opportune time. Avs need to heal up big-time.

So apparently the biggest Avs story has absolutely nothing to do with Nathan MacKinnon or the All-Star Game, but Mike Chambers, one of the few Denver-based members of the PHWA, challenging someone on Twitter to an MMA fight and then trying to tie it in with "The Code," even though he's never so much as had a sniff at pro hockey. :jerkbag:

So...MacKinnon went from day-to-day to out 2-4 weeks overnight. Yay.

Too bad. That may hurt his Hart chances. Hopefully it's on the short side of a month.

I'm guessing the HNIC producers were especially bummed tonight that MacKinnon and Scheifele were not in tonight's game in Winnipeg--it was a snoozefest.

Avs have too many players in the lineup right now who can't do a goddamn thing with the puck. They gotta try something. Not a trade, but some rejiggering would be nice.

Vladislav Kamenev, who broke his arm in his very first NHL shift, is travelling with Colorado's AHL affiliate but is still a little ways away.

"Day-to-day" is becoming an ominous phrase amongst Avs fans. Sven Andrighetto was D2D and has yet to play a single game in 2018. MacKinnon started out as D2D and then his prognosis quickly changed to "2-4 weeks." Mark Barberio is D2D and hasn't played since January 23rd. And now...Mikko Rantanen is out, and, you guessed it.

Supremely frustrating stretch here...the Avs could be, and should be, sellers at the deadline, and they'd be in prime position to do so, but their fucking roster cannot stay healthy. Guys like Blake Comeau, Mark Barberio, and Nail Yakupov will not fetch much of anything but moving them would allow the Avs to make room for some youngsters who are pretty much ready. Unfortunately, Comeau is still day-to-day with ye olde upper-body injury, Barberio isn't even skating, and because of that I'm convinced the Avs are reluctant to part ways with Yak, even though he's been absolutely terrible.

And now I'm hearing Matt Nieto got hurt in practice, so Christian rapper extraordinaire Rocco Grimaldi has been called up.

The Habs and Antti Niemi square off against the Avs tonight to close the season series. Last time, Montreal pretty much had their way with a very tired Avs team. Not sure what kind of team they'll face tonight, but they nearly blew a 3-goal lead against the lowly Sabres the other night, so...

Ugly 2-0 win vs. the Habs at home followed up by an even uglier 6-1 thumping at the hands of the Jets. Avs just not playing good hockey without their Cole Harbour Golden Boy. I think many people (me too, kinda) for a minute thought they were a little farther ahead than they actually were. And, well, they are, but they haven't turned the corner, not by a long shot. Injuries (not just MacKinnon either) are taking a huge toll right now, other players aren't ready to step up.

Avs fans need to remind themselves there are THREE waiver-wire pickups playing huge roles on this team. While those guys have done far better than anyone has a right to expect, in the long run you need better players. I think, in 1-2 years this team will be pretty close, so long as they don't pull a Chiarelli and ruin everything.

Mixed opinions on that idiotic bout between A.J. Greer and Dustin Byfuglien. Greer shouldn't have tried to instigate shit with Blake Wheeler, Buff shouldn't have continued to hit a guy while said guy was on the ice and pinned by a linesman.

Also, yet again the injury bug strikes--Jonathan Bernier is out with a concussion. The Hamburglar called up once again to back up. If this ends up being serious, he may yet get a start.

Oof. Bad, bad loss to the Oilers in MacKinnon's first game back. He looked good but the rest of the team largely looked slow and unmotivated.

And in following the law of "one guy in, one guy out" the Avs lost Erik Johnson to what could be a very serious injury. Looked like a totally innocuous check on Caiggula but then he fell in a heap and had to be helped off. Reportedly either his shoulder or wrist. Both could be very bad news. Anton Lindholm also left the game after trying to lay a check on a speeding Draisaitl.

McDavid is just unreal. Hat trick today, including the ENG dagger. Ryan Strome got denied on a point-blank chance, threw an absolute FIT on the bench afterwards, but then came back on the ice later for the eventual GWG.

Anyway, this team has a long ways to go. Sell, sell, sell, and maybe address needs this offseason. Stay the course, even if that means another lottery selection.

Man, you'd think the Avs died yesterday given how much doom and gloom is surrounding the team after Johnson went down. Case in point:

Quote:
As Avalanche await Erik Johnson’s diagnosis, a nail hovers over their coffin

https://www.bsndenver.com/as-avalanche- ... ir-coffin/

An astute Avs fan posted #s on HF that show the team has done just fine in the past when EJ gets hurt (which is actually pretty regular), except for last season, which was more attributable to Varlamov going down for the season around the same time. The belief that Tyson Barrie can't play top pairing minutes is largely a myth.

I'm under no illusions this team can absolutely make a run for the playoffs. And maybe they shouldn't. Still way too many holes in this lineup. They should be shedding assets, not keeping them, or worse, acquiring them. But I do hope they don't just tank it the rest of the way.

Nothing is worse than a fanbase that acts like key prospects have psyches made of cracked glass. "Oh NO! Don't call him up! You might RUIN HIM!!!!"

Thrilling and bizarre comeback OT win last night in Vancouver. Avs scored FIVE power play goals to win it, at one time down 4-1.

The fact it came at the direct expense of both Sedin Twins, Erik Gudbran$$$on, Alex Edler, and Mikey Del Zotto warms my cold, dead heart to no end.

Avs are just a completely different team with #29 in the lineup. Also, Tyson Barrie shows off in front of his hometown crowd with a 5-point night, the best in Avalanche history (apparently tied with some other guy I've never heard of if we take Nords history into account as well). Played nearly 30 minutes last night. I still say dude could be a top-pairing guy, though that is not ideally where you want a guy like that to be.

Has he even played a stitch of hockey this year? How could he possibly be effective for a playoff run at this point?

Reportedly had offseason surgery and has been rehabbing/recovering since then. Might explain why he was so utterly useless last year, but I still don't think he has much to offer a team other than a very effective one-timer on the power play.
