Tanev's shot suppression numbers are unreal, but Barrie is no slouch in that department that's for sure. Barrie's got the incredible offense that Tanev doesn't sniff. I don't think that you ever make a Barrie for Tanev swap if you're Colorado unless the contract talks completely tank.

Hmmmmm...

http://www.denverpost.com/2016/07/29/ty ... alanche-2/

Well, the arbitration hearing took place. This is shitty, shitty news. I'm not sure how/why in hell they couldn't reach a deal. Again, unless Barrie is asking for Chara coin there is absolutely no reason they couldn't reach a deal...unless the Avs are convinced he's a second-tier player.

So I'm guessing the countdown to Barrie's eventual exit has begun. Crappy. Just plain crappy.

Barrie signed. Four years, $22 million.

http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/tyso ... avalanche/

$5.5 million AAV. Couldn't have asked for a better deal than that.

Word has it the Avs politely asked the arbitrator to wait as long as possible to issue her ruling so they could continue to work toward a deal. Word also has it the arbitrator kinda/sorta hinted which way she was going to rule. I can't imagine the Avs even tried that hard to state their case.

This is great, great news...but it also leaves the Avs with virtually no cap room. Rumors continue to abound that John Mitchell is being shopped like crazy. Perfectly capable 4th line forward, but there are a lot of those.

Scary thing is...with virtually no cap room to speak of this is still a very unimpressive-looking team even on paper. I'd be very surprised if they weren't in last place in the division when all is said and done in 2017.

To hell with it...no one ever looks at these anyway.

Gabriel Landeskog - Nathan MacKinnon - Mikko Rantanen
Mikhail Grigorenko - Matt Duchene - Joe Colborne
Blake Comeau - Carl Soderberg - Jarome Iginla
Cody McLeod - John Mitchell - Andreas Martinsen

It's anyone's guess as to how these lines will shake out. Rantanen has spent a lot of time at center but I'm still convinced they want him on the wing. And as for Grigorenko...no idea.

There's also Rocco Grimaldi, who has an outside chance of making the club out of camp. Not even gonna try and guess who the 13th forward will be.

Francois Beauchemin - Erik Johnson
Fedor Tyutin - Tyson Barrie
Patrick Wiercioch/Eric Gelinas - Nikita Zadorov

Chris Bigras will probably make a strong push to make the team as well, but the numbers game is decidedly not in his favor here. Duncan Siemens was signed at his qualifying offer, but I very much doubt he'll even make the team and will be traded/waived before the end of the season.

Varlamov/Pickard are your backstops. Rumor has it they're shopping Varly around, which may or may not be a mistake. Picks has proven so far to be a decent NHLer but he's by no means dominant. And Varly did not do any favors in terms of trade value last season.

Wow - Iggie still hasn't retired. Is he still effective at 39? Suppose he's there to groom the youth and add leadership.

He was the return on the Reto Berra salary dump trade. I'm hoping he's a real asset and not just a throw-in.

He's little more than a depth forward/power play specialist at this point. Too slow, not nearly as effective in puck battles these days. And the Avs were definitely counting on him to be more than just the "leadership" guy, otherwise they'd have signed him for far less money. Unfortunately he's part of that truly disastrous first offseason that Sakic had as GM and they're paying the price for it now. Both Iggy's and Brad Stuart's cap hits are eating up roughly $8 million in cap space. This is a transition year, but a truly expensive one at that. And it didn't need to be. Once again, having that better-than-expected first season threw expectations out the window and threw the rebuilding plan outta whack.

Since it's a slow news day...

http://coloradoeagles.com/echl-news/vet ... to-eagles/

Veteran ECHL player Darryl Bootland makes his return to the Colorado Eagles. Skip and Bosc may remember the name. I actually didn't know he was an Avalanche draft pick.

I remember him because one of my roommates went to high school with him for a couple of years and might have been buddies, or just played rugby with him in high school. Drafted by Colorado but picked up by Deet, played a number of years in GR with a few games in DET. Story was(for what it's worth - Bruce can confirm how much teams talk to their late round picks) he would have went a lot higher in the draft but wouldn't quit rugby when teams asked him to.

He played a few games with Chris' Isles, too.
