More like they're using Ryan O'Reilly as a cautionary tale now.

Stastny never should have been a "cautionary tale." It was a colossal screwup by a colossal screwup of a general manager. Fans and Adrian Dater seem to forget that Stastny was thrown into the NHL much earlier than anticipated and made the transition much quicker and better than anyone expected. That meant he was an incredibly adept player and legit scoring line center...but it didn't mean he was destined for superstardom.

I'd be surprised if there are many more bridge contracts with the new CBA in place. You can't do the "lifetime" contracts anymore, so you can't necessarily entice a player with a big mega-contract down the road. There are of course exceptions (Subban) but I don't see many situations like that playing out the same way.
