Great player, horrible human being, and it is impossible to separate the two.

There are a hell of lot of people trying to separate the two. Tells you what you need to know.

My first childhood hero, had a farm not far away from where I was born. Loved what he did to promote the WHA and give hockey players a chance to break from basically indentured servitude to the NHL.

I'm willing to give slave owners like George Washington a bit of a pass because within historic context it was the norm of the times. Beating your wife or stating "Hitler had some good ideas" were not socially acceptable or normal in the 60's and 70's. His legacy as a hockey player should not be separated from being a deplorable human being who never acknowledged or apologized for his behaviour. For every sports obit that focuses on just his sporting legacy and not the deeply black part of his persona, all I can say is fuck you all for the white wash. Light needs to be shone on both if you're going to discuss his legacy.
