Guys have been pulling down over $10m since the late 90s, but in the salary cap era, we haven't seen a cap hit go above that thanks to the cap cheating mechanisms that were in place.

Toews and Kane are getting $10.5m per year for 2015-16 through 2023-24. They've earned it. Since their rookie season, the United Center has been packed. It was a graveyard before then.

Stars make too little in the cap era. You can't tell me you'd rather have Bolland and Orpik than Toews and, say, Sheldon Brookbank (any $1m or less guy). The guys that are overpaid are the middle of the roster guys in this cap system. Toews/Kane are still underpaid relative to their actual worth after this.

8 years, $84m are the contracts:

Heard on NHL Radio that the Hawks are roughly $10 million over the cap because of this. Most assume Patrick Sharp is a goner, but Bowman has publicly denied this. Don't know how else you shave that much cap space off, otherwise you're having to dump a top-four defender (Hjalmarsson) or a whole lot of depth guys.

They'd be in much less dire straits if they hadn't signed Crawford to that ridiculous deal.

Those deals don't kick in until next season, so they aren't 10 mil over the cap this season.

Next season they have a cap payroll of 67 million with 10 forwards and 3 defensemen, and 2 goalies under contract.

Who takes Crawford's contract("Modified NTC" so no Edmonton) and who plays in net if someone takes on Crawford's contract?

They can probably sell someone high on Bickell's playoff rep, which gets them 4 million in space for the next 3 seasons and some assets back depending on the details of the "Modified NTC".

They could've probably gotten twice the goaltending for half the price if they had just traded for Reimer. Of course I'm guessing Nonis is being unrealistic about JR's trade value, otherwise a deal already would have happened.

But whatever, they secured (arguably) the two best players in franchise history to what might be career deals, good for them.

Great players but they have a bunch of career to play out if they hope to catch up to Hull.

Not to mention the other guy with 4 Art Ross, 2 Harts, 6 time first-team All Star. They had also had a pretty good goalie during that era. The only knock was that they probably could/should have won more than 1 Cup.

Tony Espo, Chelios, Denis Savard...Toews and Kane are great and have 2 Cups, but they still have long careers ahead of them before they catch up to some of the All-Time greats. And that's not a knock on them at all.

It's kind of weird comparing accomplishments made in the Original 6 era to ones in the 30 team era.

Is it safe to say that the Blackhawks have never had the best player in the game on their team at any point in time?

Why are we talking about Reimer? Crawford ain't moving anywhere so acquiring him would just make the goaltending more expensive.

Brent Seabrook is overvalued, he'd be a good trade chip. Hjalmarsson provides more for the dollar than Seabrook does for the Hawks going forward, especially since Leddy is more than willing to step up.

The Hawks are $2m over the cap for this year, so they can take something back in a Seabrook/Sharp trade as well.

I don't think so. Bobby Hull was certainly very much in the conversation during the early to mid 1960's. Maurice Richard had retired. Gordie Howe was already 14 to 15 years into his career and Hull was first to score more than 50 goals in an NHL season. He had 3 Art Ross Trophies and won the Hart during that time frame and a Stanley Cup. I could see someone arguing for Jean Beliveau, Frank Mahovolich or even Stan Mikita but Hull was regularly tearing up and leading the league in all variety of categories. He used to just tear the Red Wings up.

This seems as good of a thread as any to use for the Hawks cap situation.

Marcus Kruger is still unsigned. As is Johnny Oduya who I think might be waiting to re-sign with Chicago after all their maneuvers instead of cash his cheque with a weaker club.

They're over $2m over the cap right now and you'd think they'd want to sign those two guys.

The guys on the block: Sharp, Bickell, and Versteeg. Bickell they would likely have to retain salary on to move. Sharp and Versteeg, most they'd want back would be an ELC.

If you take those 3 out, you're left with...

Shaw - Toews - Hossa
Teravainen - Anisimov - Kane
Panarin - Kruger - Dano
Morin - Desjardins - Tikhonov
Nordstrom/Tropp
