And they lost Hamilton to a division rival. Makes it worse.

All we need now is for Drouin to score a goal and keep his trade value up, which will allow JK to get the GWG!

Kotkaniemi has five points in three games since getting bumped to top line duty with some regulars out.

It's almost as if this guy plays better when you play him more and not glue him to the bench. What a novel concept.

Very costly loss for the Jerks the other night against the Avs. Jordan Staal, who'd been playing excellent for the Canes down the stretch, took a big hit late in the third and had to leave with what sure looked like a concussion. Freddie Andersen also appeared to have tweaked something bad in his leg and also left the game late. If both of them miss considerable time that's bad news for Carolina.

It’s not been a great offseason for the Canes thus far. They get a decent haul for Tony DeAngelo (and really, moving on from that guy is a win in any event) but now have to find a right handed puckmover to replace him. Rumors abound that they’re looking at Jeff Petry or Brent Burns.

Also, Ian Cole and Canes rinkside reporter Abby Labar are being savaged online due to accusations of an affair. Sadly it’ll likely be Labar who suffers much greater personal and professional consequences.

Gah, thank the Hockey Gods I don't have to watch the Hurricanes again this season. They're going out of their way to slog up games and it's absolutely unwatchable. This is worse than the Babcockian shit the Kings pull.

Apparently Teravainen and Pacioretty were seen in practice today so maybe there's hope they can actually score some goals. But they appear to be struggling on special teams, especially the power play.

Max Pacioretty's surgically repaired ankle gave out with no one around him. Really bad.

That's too bad...2 weeks after coming back and the ankle appears to be done again. 34 years old...doesn't sound good for his future playing career. Ankle injuries are a tough thing to have for a hockey player. Best of recovery luck to Max...hell he survived this

So anything is possible. He was in his early 20's then though.

Yeah that looked really bad, and Rod the Bod isn't even bothering with the usual obfuscation that takes place with NHL teams and injuries.

I actually feel bad for the guy, he's a legit superstar when healthy but that's been an issue over the years.

Pyotr Kochetkov, who had quite the eventful week in the AHL, gets recalled with Antti Raanta hurt.

Dude scored a goalie goal, got kicked out of the game for fighting, and then got kicked out of the NEXT game for fighting. He ain't a dull one, that's for sure.

Yes, he has had his best season of his career, especially with a VERY slow start this year. 17g 25A 42PTS

A point every 2 games. Seems to be finally turning the corner.

I'm not one to pick my team's opponent, but I really hope the Canes and Isles win tonight, which would drop the Panthers to WC2 and put the Isles and Canes into Round 1 against each other. I'd prefer that over the Isles having to face Boston. So for one night GO CANES!

Staal signs a relatively team-friendly extension: 4 years, 3M AAV. Still a shutdown guy.

Yeah, he's a pain in the ass. Good for him and the Canes.

Carolina off to a rather unspectacular start. No need for concern yet, but if they're around 10 games in and the switch still hasn't flipped, then there's a problem.

Should also be noted that the Hurricanes are the only NHL franchise this year without an affiliate! The Chicago Wolves, their last affiliate, decided to go independent this season, the first time since 1995 an AHL franchise has done so. That means the Hurricanes are distributing their prospects to a handful of other AHL team.

The Wolves are a notoriously headstrong franchise and it's no surprise they've switched affiliations several times over the years but this is also the second AHL relationship that has gone off the rails with Carolina, the first being with the in-state Checkers. Tom Dundon has a rep for being a very hardline negotiator, can't help but think he's played a part in this.
