http://hurricanes.nhl.com/club/roster.htm

Let's not forget, these Hurricanes now have the Brothers Staal (take THAT Brothers Schenn!) and Alex Semin. They also will have a full...well, kinda full...season of Kirk Muller behind the bench.

Anyway, this is my pick to take the Southeast. So there.

Carolina: Very good top line, 3 strong defensive pairings, star goaltender, good special teams (and a coach that recongizes special teams). Yeah, good choice.

Potential issue: top 6 forward injuries. Already down Ruutu, who had shoulder surgery like last week or something. Been a while for him, was getting worried.

Could use a 3rd line C. Jochen Hecht is available, though apparently Pominville is lobbying Regeir to bring him back. Langkow is supposedly retiring, but if not, he'd be a good choice. Arnott is working out with Stars players, reportedly.

They won it all after the last lockout, so why not this time?

Uh, what the fuck has happened to this team? One win in their last 10? Falls from the 3rd seed to 13th? Should Muller be getting mentions in our Coaching Watch thread?

I'd guess the loss of Cam Ward exposed them a bit. Rutherford seems to realize his defense is an absolute mess, otherwise he wouldn't have been trying to offer up Jamie McBain before the deadline. And Joe Corvo looks done to me. Makes me wonder why they traded for MAB.

EDIT: Oh, never mind. 28th ranked power play. That's why.

Well, it's a shit year, but this looks like the 2011-12 Habs in a lot of respects. Respectable underlying numbers, injuries to key players, shit luck. At least they haven't panic traded/fired anyone.

Pick a sexy young star and take the league by storm in a year, Whalercanes.

Treading water in the East at 9th place. 9th-highest payroll in the NHL, yet as irrelevant as ever.

Didn't realize there's a good chance Joni Pitkanen's career could be over.

Isn't it time Jim Rutherford get shown the door? The whole Jokinen debacle should've been the last straw.

What is it with these guys? They make a mini-resurgence with Skinner centering the top line in lieu of an injured Eric Staal, then Staal returns and they go right back in the tank.

I've heard a lot of bad things about Staal, but is he really that bad?

It's probably nothing, but Dreger reportedly said that Rutherford might put Eric Staal on the trading block, which would shock the hell out of me since he'd probably have to trade Jordan afterwards as well.

I doubt Staal(s) or Skinner are up for grabs, but it sure looks like Cam Ward is a goner. Calgary perhaps?

Also, more rumblings about Rutherford stepping down as GM and taking the President position, while Ron Francis becomes GM.

In any event, I don't think Kirk Muller makes it through this offseason.

Av, I'm disappointed in you. When I saw you posted in this forum, I thought it was sure to be a thread titled "Canes give a Faulk", about the Canes extending Faulk 6 years. Shame on you for missing that opportunity.

The Hurricanes hired Detroit assistant Bill Peters to be their new coach.

Karmanos is seemingly trying to sell the team. Can't remember where I read that.

Jordan Staal on IR. Jeff Skinner has a concussion.

It's going to be a loooooooong season in Raleigh.

People are talking about them now ...as the future home of Conor McDavid.

I suppose Ronnie Franchise should get credit for some decent (or at least necessary) moves, getting a promising young goalie in Eddie Lack for cheap, buying out Semin, getting Wisniewski for Khudobin. And he's probably not done with speculation rampant on Skinner and this being the final year of the eldest Staal's contract.

On D they might have something worth building around with Faulk, Murphy, and now Hanifin. Still not sure what they're doing with that forward corps, but then again this has always been a very oddly-built team.

Lindholm is going to be excellent.

I feel like this team will turn the corner once they divest themselves from Eric Staal. Don't get me wrong, he's a very talented player, but I think it may have been a mistake to build around him. Obviously Skinner's many concussions didn't help matters.

Peter Karmanos had some interesting things to say about his former GM.

What's even more interesting is that Karmanos fired his own son, who then followed Rutherford to Pittsburgh.

Karmonos has always been a spiteful dick. No surprise there.
