Markstrom goes sieve again last night. To his defense the team isn't exactly willing to put their bodies on the line or play tight D to help out the goaltending as Vladars numbers aren't that great either.

Lots of opportunities to block shots and these guys are like that's a hard NO.

Won't find a Flame here!

Andersson and Tanev do make an appearance in the top 50....and that makes sense.

https://www.quanthockey.com/nhl/seasons ... stats.html

Here is the team stat (30 out of 32)...clearly the last line of defence is Markstrom and Vladar.....besides not scoring a ton or having a gamebreaker the problem really is goaltending.....lots of good numbers in other areas.

Flames narrowly avert season disaster in the Desert last night. Sportsnet broadcasting maintaining a prozac like positivity with this team but at least Francis does let the truth shine through occasionally.

I believe the reality is that they will have to play at least .600 hockey the rest of the way to get in.

The shots going into the 3rd period were something like 30 to 10 for the Flames but somehow they were tied. Yeah.....I'll let you all guess why (.857).

I imagine the conversation from DS went something like its up to you guys here to blow your season........anyway the Flames thankfully came out in the 3rd and potted 3...players like Coleman, Andersson and Backlund responded. Lucic also put the biscuit in the basket in this game....that's noteworthy since he continues to be utilized regularly.

The Shots were lopsided and ended up being 51-14 in favor of Calgary.

The Flames get to test their playoff willingness in the next 7 games against Vegas, Colorado, Boston, Toronto, Minnesota (x2) and Dallas.

The picture will be a little more realistic after this swing.

Has Vladar taken over the #1 job now?

No, not that I know of....it's been his to take but he seems to enjoy sharing the "goaltending is hard" load with Markstrom. He hasn't been announced as the back to back starter today as of yet...I suppose that would say something if he was.

I've tried to understand why both of them have been subpar....is it defensive play? Blocking shots?.....Sometimes.......but if you watch the games they also have frequent inexplicable moments.

I think that has been Markstrom's standard operating procedure for his whole career, even when he was at his best. He could stop 30 high reward shots in a row, then inexplicably let a softie go by him.

I saw a horrible stat on Sportsnet tonight that said the Flames have lost 20 plus one goal games this year...ouch!

Flames have now dropped 2 on this ugly stretch. The only highlight for the Flames was Milan sitting down McDermid with a right hand last night. Props to Milan and a nod to the old etiquette.

Markstrom with another grade A deuce of a game.....818 4 goals on 22 shots...... :steamingpileofcrap: :steamingpileofcrap: :steamingpileofcrap: The team hasn't been doing him any favors lately either.

Time to give that guy the rest of the season off (if he keeps it up it won't be long anyway)......let Vladar play and give Wolf some time.

A shout out to Backlund for showing some heart!

It doesn't get any better for the Flames as they host the Bruins on Tuesday.

Mikael Backlund has a huuuuuuuuge chip on his shoulder when it comes to the Avs. He got absolutely smoked by them in that playoff series and in public statements since then it’s clear he wants his pound of flesh back. Definitely started playing a lot rougher in the third period, laid a big hit on MacKinnon that the latter did not take well to (it looked clean to me) and then he and Byram went at it later.

He may not be a great hockey player anymore but Milan Lucic may be the absolute toughest mofo I have ever seen take NHL ice. Seriously, both Hamhuis and Subban tried taking him down in separate incident and both came away with very serious injuries. I’d argue neither guy ever returned to form after that happened. And then last night he takes on Kurtis MacDermid and sends him into concussion protocol with a well-placed face punch.

Nikita Zadorov is reportedly getting slagged by the local press. He got turnstiled last night by Denis Malgin. Not a good look for a guy usually known for being fantastic at 1-on-1 defense.

Standing O for Mr. Kadri. He deserves it and then some.

54 saves out of Ulmark................on 57 shots

Can't say the Flames weren't trying!

Huberdeau only scores when I bench him in my fantasy league....maybe I should just drop him!

So that's dropping 3 in a row out of the tough stretch. Next up Leafs, Min, Dallas, Min. A positive is that all these teams in the wildcard hunt don't seem to be in any hurry to claim a spot. 21 games to go!

Vladar makes 3 saves out of 5 shots (cardboard cutout)
And Markstrom 13 out of 15........(.600 and .867 respectively)

That is just not good enough......regardless if the team makes some mistakes in front of them.

Where is Dustin Wolf? Put these jokers on notice!

As said elsewhere, what a crazy game.

Gotta ask, Jay, who were you actually rooting for last night? Had to be a tad conflicting.

Apparently Markstrom is going to get the remainder of the starts. So its more live by the sword, die by the sword for the Flames to close it out.

Calgary drops 4 in a row on this killer 7 game stretch...I did say this was going to test their playoff willingness.

Markstrom actually was pretty good last night keeping them in a tight one against the Leafs.

Kelly mentioned something about Toffoli being available last night......other than that no real appealing options right now since they sat on the fence for so long trying to decide who they were.

Do they try to move on from Huberdeau and Weegar this offseason? Call a Mulligan and try again?

Sweet Jesus.....Sutter believes they win 21 in a row (but you can never tell with him)!

Well that's what's wrong this year! Reality is a tough pill!
