I can't help but wonder if we really need between-the-benches coverage. I get that it gives some good perspective and allows for the broadcaster to do some impromptu interviews during the game but I wonder if it's worth it.

Yeah, all they mainly do is say "there's chirping between the benches but I can't repeat what was said". Tee heee, hockey players curse at each other.
Thomas Hickey got hit in the head with a stick not long ago during an Isles game. He had to retire early due to concussions so it wasn't that funny. One of these days one of those reporters is going to get really hurt and then people will finally start asking what you've asked here. And no, I don't think it's worth it at all. It's like sending Jim Cantore to a place with 75 mph winds and raging floods so you can be told "on location!" that hurricanes can be dangerous. Thanks for the shocking news.
