Sometimes lived in the shadow of 99 and 66 in the 80s (including that Canada Cup GWG), but Mr. Winnipeg Jet is a hall of famer and legend in his own right, and the patron Saint of losing teams.

One of the best to ever suit up.

After a long battle with stomach cancer he succumbs to the disease at the relatively young age of 57. Bummer. He seemed like a wholly decent human.

Way too soon. I really didn't get a chance to see him play much but he was one of the best players from my childhood.

Also, he sure as hell helped out the current incarnation of the Jets by convincing them to take his young protege Mark Scheifele in the draft.

Very sad news. 57 is simply way too young in this day and age.

Patron saint of losing teams, I love that. I do remember him well. His Jets teams were very, very good. Just not quite good enough to get past the all time great Oilers. I'd argue nobody at the time could play against Gretzky as well as Hawerchuck could.

Yeah I'm pretty sure if not for Wayne and Mario, he'd be hands-down the best player of his generation.

And unlike The Great One, I think he turned out to be a successful coach.

Butch Goring talked about him a bit during the Isles game. Said Hawerchuk called him this morning to see how he's doing. Butch was kind of choked up, saying "he's been going through this for months and he calls to see how I'm doing. That's just the kind of guy he was."

RIP.

Serge Savard said Dale called all his old hockey buddies to say goodbye when he knew his time was up. Imagine doing that when you've got a couple of days to live.

Everyone is raving about what a good guy Dale was. He truly was a mensch.

That's far too young and for a guy who, by all accounts, was good to everyone around him. What a player and dude.
