I heard that this was somewhat controversial, that he was slashing at another player and accidentally hit the linesman but the policy is any contact gets punished whether incidental or not. But I also heard that the linesman is young and the two know each other from when they were kids and it might have been an off ice grudge. <note, I'm not some sort of closet Downie fan, I have him in my keeper league pool team for PIMs!> Whatever the truth, Downie is pretty much fucked as these suspensions will follow him for the rest of his career if they don't end it.

Do AHL suspensions carry over to the NHL?

They shut down the entire NHL for the year just to make sure he didn't play!

Another thing I heard about Downie, and this isn't meant to be offensive to anyone, but I heard that he is, for lack of a better word, slightly retarded in addition to being partially deaf. Apparently he wears a hearing aid and if you mess with it he freaks out. I have no idea how true any of this is but if anyone does know if he has some sort of handicap please enlighten.

He has some hearing loss from his the car accident he was in when he was a kid. Not sure how much. I've heard about the freaking out part too. As for the retarded thing, I think "brainless idiot" would be a better phrase.
