Feels like this is getting set up for Dach to go #3, and Byram to go #4. I'd rather the Avs go for a forward in this draft but if they feel the defenseman is the best player available, then so be it.

Scratch that. Looks like Chicago is just about dead-set on taking Alex Turcotte, which makes sense for them.

So it looks like it'll be Hughes/Kaako/Turcotte, which leaves the Avs at #4 to pick between Dach, Cozens, Byram, and Zegras. Podkolzin's stock continues to plummet.

Really don't know who I'd like for Colorado to go with. Byram is possibly the most talented player on the board at that point but the Avs really, really need a center. Dach is supremely talented and obviously a pretty big kid, but some red flags surround his play away from the puck. Cozens is the exact opposite--smooth skating forward with good two-way ability, but his offensive upside may be limited. Zegras isn't big, but talented and scrappy. I'm guessing, now, that they take Zegras. Of course I might change my mind a little later.

Pronman's mock is out https://theathletic.com/1012017/2019/06 ... nhl-draft/

I won't give it all away but he does confirm what we already know: Kakko made it a tighter race than expected with his strong showing at the Worlds, but Hughes will still go no. 1.

Other notes:

Edmo at 8 is in play. Holland ain't waiting.
German D Moritz Seider is rising
Russian F Vasili Podkolzin is falling
Spencer Knight a rare goalie that'll go in the first round

This is going to be a fun draft. Deep pool of prospects, lots of teams who want to get better now, cap space tighter than teams expected. Let's do this.

Didn't know this until I heard it on the Bobcast but defenseman Bobby Brink's full name is Bobby Orr Brink, and he has two younger brothers: Joseph Henry Brink and Henry Richard Brink, named, of course, after Les Frères Richard. Dad is quite the hockey fan.

No shocker: Hughes and Kakko go 1-2.

Big shocker: The Hawks go with Kirby Dach, and the Avs bypass Alex Turcotte as well and select Bowen Byram.

Turcotte falls to the Kings. Did not see that coming.

WHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATTTTTTTTT

Moritz Seider is a Red Wing!!!!

Most lists I have in front of me didn't even have him as the 2nd ranked defenseman, or 3rd.

Drama...I LOVE IT.

Even Seider was stunned.

I trust Yzerman as a GM, especially based on his work in Tampa Bay, but damn...

Seriously, NHL GMs are just...weird.

2018, all kinds of d-men available, guys snatch up all the centers.

2019, all kinds of centers available, there's this crazy-ass run on defensemen.

And of course, John Chayka makes a trade. And I'm not sure he even needed to bother making it.

Wanted the Habs to take Seider, but I'll gladly take Caufield. All he does is score goals.

Habs fans are gonna fucking love him. Apart from Hughes no one lit up the ice like he did when I saw the USNTDP in town here. He was a little wrecking ball, blowing up guys all over the ice and fearlessly went to the dirty areas of the ice, but had enough skills and smarts to find seams and sneak past guys as well. Cannot believe he fell as far as he did. Either people thought his records this year were just him feeding off Hughes and his stellar teammates, or they just aren't convinced even now that a player his size can be a star. I imagine they'll be proven wrong. Again.

What a weird, wild draft. A whole bunch of off-the-board picks and reaches, and EIGHT players selected (SEVEN in the first fifteen) came from the USNTDP team. That's astounding and will never, ever happen again.

Whoa, Marleau and a 1st to Carolina.

Then Subban to NJ for Santini, Davies and two 2nds

So they waited until the cap was formally announced before finally pulling the trigger on some deals. And it's a pretty unimpressive number so teams had to scramble.

This is an astounding photo. I don't think we'll ever, ever see this again.

Kind of a bummer that this generational squad didn't actually win any championships. Because they're this weird entity that plays in a junior league, yet also plays overseas, the best players were stuck across the pond when the USHL playoffs took place. The stand-ins lost in the first round, and the top players ended up running into a ridiculously good Russian goalie, so no gold medal either.

FTR I think Cole Caufield might actually be a bit shorter than 5'7", but who cares, dude can play.

God, I was so confused by the USHL Twitter feed...

So it turns out there's ANOTHER JACK HUGHES playing for the USNTDP team this year, no relation to the guy currently playing for the New Jersey Devils.
