Its that time of year again! When I get to brew a carafe of Tim Horton's and watch the kids play hockey at 5 AM!

Love it!

Sweden looks to be pretty bad ass this time around.

The host Finns have a couple of top prospects in Jesse Puljujarvi and Patrik Laine.

Team USA is coached by Ron Wilson (!)

Team Canada is a pretty meh squad this year. Interested in seeing Val D'Or's Julien Gauthier: a mountain of a man and a potential future NHL power forward

Transition year for Canada; they lose the opener to the Yanks 4-2. Ricketts with an impossibly dumb play late in the third when he deflected one past his own goalie.

Gauthier looked good parked in the opposing crease. Strome and Marner are certainly top level prospects. Can't say much about the rest of the team. Pretty anonymous bunch, although they hung in there for most of the game.

Finland clobbered Belarus.

William Nylander, away from Bruce for the week, probably has a concussion.

We picked Ron fucking Wilson? There wasn't a better option available?

He overstayed his welcome in the NHL, but I think he's a good pick for the junior squad. Three years away from the game can be humbling.

If he still requires two hands on the stick at all times in the defensive zone then he has no business coaching anything higher than Mini-Mites.

Not our best tournament but excellent entertainment value in the elimination game.

Finland v. Russia in the Finals. The Tsar will be pleased.

Didn't get to see any of this. Extremely disappointed. Was it on Center Ice?

Geez...this seems a tad harsh.

Based on what Kouleas and Barnaby were saying this morning, it was more Lowry's fault for failing to bring a cohesive, disciplined squad to the tourney. In any event, he won't get another shot to redeem himself.

It's way over the top. He's a teenager. On the other hand, he needs to go back to junior and dominate there. He can't help the Canuck's and he can't learn much playing a few minutes a night. Only reason Benning won't send him down is he'd rather have him here to save face than admit he blew by keeping him here.

On the TSN morning show in Toronto this morning:

Dean Blundell: "Were you surprised by Ron Wilson's comments about not knowing a single player on the Russian team?"

Kyle Dubas, perfectly serious and without any hesitation: "No."

Laughter ensues.

I watched the Gold Medal game, a very enjoyable match if I may say so. I only caught bits and pieces of the earlier games. When the tournament is being contested in Europe or Asia it's not worth getting out of bed early to watch. With this tournament being held in Finland, I couldn't watch most of the matches live due to sleep / work conflicts. I'll be more attentive next year when it is being held in Montreal / Toronto and the match starting times will be much more agreeable to my schedules.
