Did anyone else know this was going on? I wouldn't have however I woke up after the NHL playoff game to a deafening Latvian chant as they were playing the US.

Its being played in Stockholm and Helsinki apparently. Pretty cool but tv schedule seems to be a bit erratic.

Who the hell decided this was a good idea to put it on now?

It's the World Championships and they happen every year at this time. It's basically the end of year big Euro hockey fest. If NHLers show up it's a bonus.

For some reason or another I thought they had gotten rid of this in favor of Olympics only even though I probably watch this every year without realizing it.

Shouldn't Russia win this every year?

You're confusing the World Cup of Hockey with the World Championships, as Sask mentioned.

Looks like Yzerman won't be calling Subban. Based on Tampa's lineup, not surprising Stevie is clueless when it comes to defencemen.

WTF? He cannot be that out of touch, Subban is the most dynamic dman in the game and is going to play for Canada for a lot of years...you can't risk snubbing him and him return giving team Canada the finger in future years ala Samuelsson with the Swedes

Seems like Subban wasn't snubbed. Hamhuis was the last addition to the team, even though they have roster spots available Yzerman feels 12 forward and 8 Dmen are plenty. Personally I can see his point, bringing in Subban just pushes another player into the press box and I think they need to respect the sacrifice in time the players are making and not do that unnecessarily. If they get an injury I bet he gets a call.

That's being snubbed. There's a spot and Stevie Y doesn't want to give it to him.

There are two spots, which means he's snubbing every dman and forward in the league. They never had any intention of filling those spots to begin with and shouldn't change the plan just because Subban became available.

PK's not every dman in the league. He's one of the best, and one would think a favourite to play in Sochi. Just for that reason Stevie should give him the reps here.

As I always say with all knee hits -- not just those involving a player I like -- it honestly doesn't look intentional to me. (Honest question: why would it be, especially in an IIHF tournament?) People always take the kneeing player's last second adjustment as some sort of attempt to injure, but it always strikes me as the player realizing at the last moment that a collision is about to occur and reacting physically as anyone would.

It was a strange play by a very unpredictable player. Edler looked like a zombie from Thriller out there -- his legs spread wide apart as though his skates were stuck in train tracks - heading straight for Staal. Don't think it was intentional but there was no way around the suspension.

Not sure how you can say it wasn't intentional unless you truly believe Edler turned into a zombie there. He had all the time in the world to veer off and didn't so much as budge.

Personally speaking, if this costs Staal time in the NHL, it should get Edler Shanabanned to start the season. But I don't think the rules allow for that.
