http://www.nytimes.com/2012/02/19/sport ... sroad.htmlKaufmann's career journey is actually fairly typical, but his religion and family history makes this case quite unique. Kaufmann's grandpa and great-aunt were his family's only two survivors of the Holocaust, originally from Wittlich, Germany. Kaufmann grew up in Minnesota, was a Golden Gopher, and as a small forward saw his opportunities limited as a professional: except in Germany. Due to his family history, Germany was willing to accelerate the process to give him German citizenship, a process that would allow him to escape the import designation as a professional player.
On February 10, he represented Germany for the first time in a tournament in Belarus. The last Jewish player on the German national hockey team was
Rudi Ball, who led the Germans to a bronze medal in 1932, and who's talent allowed him to compete for them again in 1936 and seemingly escape the reach of The Final Solution.
It's a long story, but a pretty amazing one.
