I didn't follow the 2006 Olympics (or any other, really), so I didn't know, but it is indeed a problem if losing can get you a better opponent. I assume in this case it's because seeding is coming from a much-too-small sample size.

I saw this as a problem not of the team's making but one of the system's...

Fact of the matter is, the players probably discussed who they could end up facing and the scenarios, but Slovakia beating them was hardly an upset. Slovakia went perfect in the round robin.
