If people lament that the NHL is "a business," I suppose that makes the KHL a "Russian business," which is way, way worse. I'll bet there are even protekzia clauses in the standard form contract ("Hey, I accepted a discount in return for a no-mafia clause, you can't threaten me!").

For what it's worth, I can't comment on the Russian justice system, but "pulling a fast one" would be considered as circumstances that might void the contract as unconscionable in our legal system, particularly for a guy that doesn't speak the language. Or at worst, the player could arguably turn around and sue for losses due to his detrimental reliance on a misrepresentation.

BTW, I love the Yakov Smirnov joke following the article -- "In Soviet Russia, contract terminates you!"
