The NHL is struggling in marginal markets where hockey is not part of the social fabric.

Anything that creates interest and enthusiasm for the sport in the United States is positive for the NHL. If the play of Team USA doesn't spark interest and inspire young players in the USA then I don't know what will.

If Bettman can't see past the few doubloons his pathetic all star game earn him then he's a poorer business man than I think he is. I think his being able to hold something over the players gives him some satisfaction.

Tinfoil Hat required beyond here. ;)

I was going to say - wouldn't want to piss off some dangerous loon hockey fan sitting in the depths of the Kremlin with some spare cold-war vintage poisons sitting in his desk drawer and feeling irritated that some goof was going fuck with the premier event of the next winter Olympics that his country was hosting. However, if the NHL wasn't going to participate then surely the KHL would and that would be enough to trounce most of the other teams playing without NHL player and guarantee a better result than this year - he might just close the desk drawer and pour himself a stoli instead.

Looking more like the NHL will make an appearance in Sochi. Primary reasons appear to be legal ones this article argues.

http://www.ctvolympics.ca/hockey/news/n ... 2014+games
Quote:
Already, the league's two top Russian players - Alexander Ovechkin and Evgeni Malkin - have publicly stated they will breach their NHL contracts in order to compete in Sochi.
The league can level all sorts of threats against them - major fines, indefinite suspensions - but if they stick to their guns, the league will have a major issue on its hands.

The time difference is a pretty big... 7 hours time diff between Sochi, RU and ET; 10 hours to PT... Would the IOC schedule the hockey games any differently in SochI? Otherwise, the Gold medal final might be broadcast live at 7AM ET and 4AM PT... Any gains that the NHL might benefit from these Olympics might not be sustainable in the next...

Simple: run the GMG on the Saturday night in Sochi rather than Sunday afternoon. That way it's at least at 10 AM Pacific, so a Saturday afternoon start on the East coast. Have the NHLers arrive a day earlier to make the dates work. Give the North American teams the late games this time that were so entertaining these past two weeks.

If I recall from Nagano, games were played pretty early local time. How did basketball work in Beijing?

I missed all of the Sydney Olympics preparing for my move to Switzerland -- apart from the season itself, did they more or less play to the Eastern Time audience there?

Yup. Flip the chart and you'll get the general pattern of beer consumption over the same period.

I tink every major stadium is designed with this pattern in mind; big spikes in demand followed by long durations of almost no demand...

The mythologizing going on when it comes to the relative "quality" of olympic hockey vs. the NHL is getting ridiculous. The guy uses a game between the depleted Leafs and the decimated Bruins as an example. He seems to also forget that while the final game of this tournament was as awesome and spectacular a game as you could ask for, most everything leading up to it--especially the preliminary rounds--were outright snoozers.

And I'm pretty sure there were headshots in the olympics too. One guy got suspended a game for it--can't remember who though.

He actually comes across as sincere in his Team Canada fan-dom, which surprises me a little given how much of a hockey fan he is. Anyway, apparently, Letterman has invited Sydney Crosby to appear on the Late Show, but Crosby's been a little busy lately.

One such hit was the NHL's reigning 2 time MVP concussing a former NHL MVP with the hit of a the tournament, a shoulder to his head.

Hey, at least Jagr was carrying the puck at the time and had no reason not to see it coming.
