Excellent piece. Really like Friedman's work...
Hopefully, they can right the ship; it can only mean great things for hockey fans if the Russians can evolve their game. Not sure if there is a role for the five-man unit philosophy in an Olympic competition where the players don't already play together over a longer period of time. It's interesting to see how the Russians reacted to this. I can remember the late 70s and early 80s when Canadian hockey officials went through a similar thing when the Red Army and Moscow Dynamo teams regularly destroyed the teams that the NHL could send over for the World Championships.
