The new Penn State hockey program is having a domino effect.

In addition to Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, and Penn State forming a new Big Ten hockey conference (which of course isn't ten programs, just like in football), Denver, Colorado College, Nebraska-Omaha, UND, Miami (Ohio I'm assuming), and Minnesota-Duluth are breaking away to form their own conference. WCHA is pretty much screwed at this point and will probably go away. Definitely gotta hit up some UNO/DU games this upcoming season.

Terry Pegula has definitely left his mark in hockey in a very short period of time.

Most analysis I've read says that the smaller schools are being screwed big time. The University of Alaska-Anchorage is really pissed, saying that at the last WCHA meeting they had a unanimous motion to approach Miami about joining the W since they were going to be left out big time by the formation of the Big Ten. Then, they're claiming the big schools in the W went behind their back and asked Miami to join a new conference.

This will probably make for a real rich school/poor school split in college hockey. Probably won't attract the volume of players unless they can get more big schools involved in Div. 1 Hockey, like Illinois or the coveted California schools.

If the UAA Seawolves had an video intro like their counterparts in Fairbanks, the other schools wouldn't dare leave the WCHA.

Behold...the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC).

Puck Daddy just had a recent post that ripped this shift to "power conferences." Have to say I agree.

Pro: big schools devoting big bucks to their hockey programs, and all the potential business and broadcasting offshoots that will come from it. Could also entice other big schools to get on board

Con: Small schools will get the shaft. Maybe they should start a Mountain West hockey division for all the sad sacks :suicide:

It took a once in a generation type donation to get Penn State in the fold... maybe a couple of schools do, but it'll take a lot of money to entice some schools to join. Illinois seems like the most logical big school to join, also Syracuse I've heard as a "WTF, why don't they have a program" school.

And the counterpoint.

So long as this is more like College basketball and not college football I think it'll be fine.
