Ellen Etchingham is re-watching old hockey games from before she started watching the sport in 2006. So this is the first full game she's ever watched of Roy.... June 29, 2002. You know the one. Game 6, Western Conference Final, 2-0 Red Wings win.

Quote:
In the backwards-movie of Roy’s life, he never, ever makes such a vain mistake again. He comes back the next year even better than before and wins the Cup, and after a run of solid playoff performances and another ring, he demands a trade back to his hometown. There he is welcomed with joy and exultation, immediately ending the longest championship drought in franchise history. He inspires a generation of young local goaltenders, and then, finally, at 20 years old, leads the team on one last miraculous playoff run, brings the Cup home, and retires in triumph to play road hockey for the rest of his days. Seen in reverse, it’s the story of a brilliant goalie who learns the importance of humility and getting along with people.

Some stories are better backwards.

Great piece, great writer. She only started watching in '06? Wow.

Patrick Roy has transcended the mundane positional errors and puckhandling miscues of ordinary goalies.

Hilariously ironic statement.

Quote:
At the other end of the ice, Hasek swoons to the ice like a Victorian matron on her fainting couch every time the puck goes near him, and every shot you think, man, if they’d just lifted that two inches more…

I remember reading a study of Hasek's style that said he had an incredible understanding of vertical angles in the net, which led to the lie-down and cover low part of his repitoire. Simply put, he lied down on the ice to cover low and while it seemed like the upper part of the net was open, the shooters had a really low-percentage shot to get it over him. Sometimes it didn't work, like in this dirty backhander(and an appropriate goal given the title of the blog), starting at 1:41.

Yeah, the amount of times I frustratingly yelled at Habs players to JUST SHOOT IT OVER Hasek must have been around a billion. Eventually I conceded that he must know what the fuck he was doing.

Ellen is fully formed now, but I really enjoyed reading her takes in that first year. She started writing about hockey as soon as she started watching it, essentially.

This was also her first experience of pre-lockout obstruction rules, and it was painfully noticeable to her. She live-tweeted her watching it last night, and was surprised at how dominant Detroit was in this game. Of course, Colorado was trying to win four games against a team with Hall of Famers on their 4th line without Forsberg.... it was definitely going to be on Roy's back they'd do it.

Yeah it would be painfully noticeable...hell, it's clearly obvious to anyone going back and watching it, let alone someone who hadn't seen it before.
