I'm kinda calling foul here (I was listening to Boomer Gordon on the way into work and so I know I'm not the only one, he called this story "hogwash").

This is more or less a market correction and the after-effect of analytics. You simply can't spend that much on "intangibles" anymore. The last team to try was Edmonton, and I think everyone has learned from their mistakes...for the most part.

Not that it's an entire team, but I'd point to the return of Matt Martin and the 4 year deal to Leo Komarov as signing "intangibles". Neither guy is very good at the hockey thing.
