Bergevin just said it wasn't about the picks but this package was specifically designed to avoid that next tier so......I call BS on that one. Its a way to say you did something to the fans but not commit GM suicide. That's just too many picks to give up.

This offer sheet shit is complicated and just not worth the hassle.

Looks like the Avs don't even qualify to tender one anyway.

Quote:
What are the details for the club making the offer sheet?
To submit an Offer Sheet, the following conditions must be met:

The submitting club must have all of the required draft picks available prior to submission
All of the draft picks required as compensation must be the club's own draft picks (draft picks acquired from a different team in a trade cannot be used)
The draft picks must available in the nearest entry draft, unless the compensation requires two or more draft picks in the same round: an extra year can be used to for compensation for these picks (if two 1st round picks are required, the club must have two 1st round picks available in the next three drafts)
If an Offer Sheet is proposed in which multiple draft picks from the same round are required as compensation, the additional draft picks are sourced from the immediately succeeding drafts in which the draft picks are available
A club is permitted to present multiple Offer Sheets, so long as the club has all of the picks required to satisfy each Offer Sheet.

NOTE: Clubs who do not have all of their own picks cannot substitute those picks with picks they have obtained from other clubs. However, clubs can reacquire their own picks in order to meet the requirements, but they must do so prior to submission

The 7 day middle finger period begins!

The end of the day finally culminated in the Avs getting off their arse. Unfortunately that had them picking up Nazim Kadri. I guess this move works for both teams but you can't help but feel that Toronto got the better of this one. If I didn't already have a reason to dislike this team....I certainly don't like that guy. As Butch said.....Kadri doesn't like to play hockey in April so...... :wookie: Thank Goodness Kadri (with his whopping 16 goals) nixed a trade to the Flames earlier in the day! Already enough passengers on that train.

Overall I really liked what Dallas did and Leafs look to come out retooled here if they can sign Marner.

I don't understand the Varlamov signing in NYI or the Lehner signing in CHI but maybe more to those stories.

The offersheet, more than likely a token, served up conversation and discussion all day.

A very enjoyable day that makes up for the trade deadline duds. Even better that it comes during the offseason.

Kadri scored 16 goals as a 3rd line defensive specialist when his ES ice time and superior linemates got all snatched up by Matthews and Tavares. He scored 32 in back-to-back seasons when he was the 2nd-line center. I don't think he'll reach THOSE numbers with the Avs, but there's reason to believe he'll bounce back. As for maintaining discipline in April, well, we'll see...they gotta make the postseason first.

I too like what Dallas did, even though they made themselves look older and slower. BUT...if anyone knows what to do with slow-moving talent, it's John Stevens. That right there might have been their best offseason acquisition. Friedman said in a recent 31 Thoughts pod that he's the best assistant coach in hockey.

Not thrilled that pretty much every team in the Central got better, and fucking both O'Reilly AND Duchene are back in the Central (just wait, Tyson Barrie will sign with a Central team last season), but the Avs improved themselves as well.

Notable names remaining:

Jake Gardiner
Micheal Ferland
Marcus Johansson
Dion Phaneuf
Patrick Marleau
Jason Pominville
Derick Brassard
Marc Methot
Jamie McGinn
Marcus Kruger
Thomas Vanek
Tobias Rieder
Nick Cousins

Guys like Joe Thornton and Justin Williams are likely either returning to their respective teams, or retiring.

Outside of those top three guys, there ain't much. Kinda surprised those two still haven't inked a deal.

EDIT: GAH! Forgot about Johansson!!!!

Can't believe that Vanek isn't an Oiler yet.

Gardiner, Johansson and Ferland will still get paid. The rest will fight it out for scraps.

I've been hoping the Isles would sign Johnasson.

They might still, no? Panarin would've gotten 4.5M more than Lee...

Oh shit...Dzingel is still available, forgot about him. No idea where he ends up. There's another player where the market may have been a little softer than expected.

Also forgot about Brassard. Lumbus could probably get him back for cheap.

Might be the end of the road for the following players:

Deryk Engelland
Niklas Kronwall
Justin Williams (word has it if Carolina doesn't take him back he'll be done)
Dan Girardi
Matt Moulson
Marc Methot
Cam Ward
Valeri Nichushkin
Michal Neuvirth
David Schlemko
Luca Sbisa
Chris Kunitz (who has mentioned the R-word but hasn't yet formally announced it)
Al Montoya
Eric Fehr

Oh, and um...Chris Wideman is currently sitting without a contract. That video did irreparable damage to his career.

Marcus Johansson signs a very team-friendly 2-year deal with the Buffalo Sabres. 2 years, $4.5 million AAV. That's actually a pretty good fit--a guy who can play all three forward positions, is good on faceoffs (but probably best on the wing) who drives play and coming off a very strong playoff run. Obviously some injury concerns but it's not like the Sabres are unfamiliar with players like that.

Weird trade from the Hawks side, I like it for the Sabres though.

Botterill has had a very good offseason as opposed to the shitshow of a year ago.

I don't have to dig it up, but I'm guessing they've got intel on Nylander's time in the OHL like they did with Strome, and can see some upside in him.

And I predict they will eventually come to regret investing in Strome. He scored at an insane clip last season after making the jump. I don't think he's as bad as he displayed in AZ but I also don't think he's necessarily a reliable scorer either. We'll see on Nylander but dude hasn't exactly followed his brother's or father's path thus far (that might be unfair though).

Sabres have collected a LOT of right-handed defensemen, including one (Bogosian) who likely is done. Speculation on them moving Ristolainen is at a fever pitch right now. Ironic they couldn't wait to get rid of the future Selke/Conn Smythe/Stanley Cup winner but are taking their sweet time in dumping their extra Rasmus.

Everyone probably knows this, but Matt Cullen officially announced his retirement at the age of 42.

Amazingly enough, he isn't the last remaining member of the 1996 NHL Draft Class, that would be a smallish defenseman by the name of Zdeno Chara.

There are two remaining from the '97 draft (Thornton and Marleau, duh), none remaining from '98, and Ryan Miller is the lone holdout from '99.

Dzingel finally signs, two years at $6.75 million total to join the Bunch of Jerks.

Still surprised no one's bothered picking up Brian Boyle. Surely someone needs a defensively responsible center with size who wins faceoffs and can plunk in some goals sitting there in front of the net. He's only 34 so you won't get hosed with his cap hit in the event of a buyout/retirement.

Is Gardiner sweating yet? Teams have moved on to their RFAs. Guessing he'll take a smaller deal to play for a contender or Minny will move around money to bring him home. Winnipeg also rumoured to be doing the same.

Ferland's probably happy he got a fourth year from Vancouver.

Andrei Markov's agent is banging the drums about an NHL return. Anyone willing to bite?

Was still a top-4 dman when Bergevin overplayed his hand and Markov bolted to Russia. But he's 40 and according to KHL watchers, noticeably slowed down last season. Is it a matter of playing down to his competition or has his age finally caught up with him? He's such a smart defenceman I think he can probably hang on one more season, but is he better than a depth guy and PP specialist at this point? Not sure.

Post subject:  Re: Offseason 2019

Markov was already looking kinda slow his final season, wasn't he? I suppose in a third pairing role he'd be okay but I'd be wary of signing him.

Looking at Cap Friendly, at this point no teams are officially below the cap floor, and there are three teams (Rangers, Golden Knights, Penguins) who are above the cap. I'm not sure if the site takes LTIR into consideration when calculating that, but already has David Clarkson listed as a non-roster player. There's still time yet for some salary dump deals to be made.

Kevin Shattenkirk goes where all Rangers seem to end up these days...Tampa.

https://nypost.com/2019/08/05/kevin-sha ... rs-buyout/

Gets a one-year deal to try and save his career. That's honestly about the best place he could've landed to accomplish that.

On paper this seems like a great fit and a nice buy-low for the Bolts. Then again, sometimes when a guy gets bought it it's because he's done.
