I've been thinking about how the Subban and Hall trades totally wrecked the trajectories of two promising teams. Nashville and New Jersey are now on the upswing with those two players as their franchise faces, while the Habs and Oilers have floundered. Weber and Larsson have done their best, but haven't been able to shape either team the way their GMs had intended.

What if the Habs and Oilers had just traded PK and Taylor for each other that fateful summer? It would have looked like a steal for the Oilers at the time, but in the long run, I think the Canadiens would have been better off trading for a talented young forward than an ageing defenceman.

With Hall, the Habs wouldn't have been so desperate to trade Sergachev for Drouin, one would assume. Sure, their D would've been weakened, but dropping Markov and Emelin and getting Alzner and Schlemko has damaged it worse than anything. Could you imagine a team with Pacioretty and Hall sniping on the wings? They'd be deadly.

For the Oil, a team led by McDavid and Subban would've been a no-brainer. Of course, would PK have thrived in Edmonton the way he has in Nashville? Probably not, given there's no Josi or Ekholm in Edmonton.

Betcha if the Oil did that and proceeded to stink up the joint, that there would be a lot more criticism from the the Edmonton water carriers towards PK than towards Larsson. Something something not hating to lose enough, likes attention too much, smiling etc.

Something to think about but stupid's gonna stupid. Both guys still think they're the smartest in the room.

Oh God the Spec articles alone...

Both teams would probably be better off, yes. But still in terrible shape because both believe in a philosophy that was starting to get outdated even in the '90s. "Heavy hockey" or what have you. They still would've surrounded PK/McDavid and Hall/Price with talentless scrubs.
