Scott Darling on waivers. Swing and miss by Carolina to move on from Cam Ward. Still has two more seasons at $4.15M AAV after this one.

Rod the Bod hasn't hidden the fact in interviews that Darling showed up to his first Canes camp in less-than-prime physical condition. If there ends up being an amnesty buyout period within the next two years, this'll definitely be one of them.

Which is nuts because he had to climb from the bottom to make the show and finally got a starting gig for the first time. Weirdly enough, he was born in nearby Newport News (making him a sorta local player) but grew up in Illinois, meaning he left his actual hometown team.

Something tells me he'll end up back there in some fashion. But it'll likely be a long road.

Well then, we got some waiver wire activity aplenty.

Jean-Sebastien Dea (is that surname French?) gets claimed by Pittsburgh from New Jersey.
Calvin Pickard gets claimed by Arizona from Philadephia. Apparently both Kuemper and Raanta are hurt.

In addition to Darling, Carolina also placed Valentin Zykov on waivers. 23 years old, big RH shot winger, scores lots at the AHL level but hasn't quite put it together in the NHL.

Also, Anaheim puts scoring phenom Ben Street on waivers. Again.

STL puts Nikita Soshkinov on waivers. Now's your chance to get him back Toronto!

Zykov gets claimed by EDM. Wonder if he ends up being the heavy top-six grinder type that Looch can't be anymore. Probably not.

As for today's wire, we have former MON 1st rounder Nikita Scherbak.

Much like Dylan Strome, a very talented player who lights it up at the AHL level, but likely too slow for the big leagues.

Scherb had some injuries that slowed his development. Combined with his poor defence and skating, his offensive skill just doesn't pop enough.

Last place Kings pick up Scherbak and Leipsic on waivers. Good luck with that.

Chad Johnson waived by STL, picked up by ANA.

Lots of injured goalies right now, so we could see some more movement.

Howard is playing awesome. Now would be the time to find a team desperate for his services. However, Holland probably wouldn't want to because they are only 3 points back of the wild card and they've indicated that they want to bring him back next season(though you can still do that even if you deal him but would Holland want to).

Is it just me or are we seeing a lot more claims than we used to?

Zykov goes from EDM to VGK, which means Carolina didn't want him back even for the minors.

STL waives both Jordan Nolan and Chris Butler, both clear and are sent down.

OTT waives Tom Pyatt, he clears, and gets traded to VAN, or Utica I guess.

Why would you trade for a guy who just cleared waivers? Why not just claim him? Or was the trade specifically an AHL deal, and Van didn't want to bring attention to him with the trade, only to lose him when they tried to send him down?

I think that portion of the trade was an AHL deal, yes, since Archibald, who is playing for Utica, went the other way.

Truth be told I think Benning and Dorion just threw those guys into the deal to make it look like something other than a goalie dump.

Moving bodies.

Or, you just have absolutely no fucking idea how waivers work

David Schlemko rides the waves.

A seemingly innocuous depth signing at the time, through circumstances beyond his control (Alzner sucking, Markov leaving, Beaulieu traded) was thrust into the role of potential top pairing partner with Weber. Was hurt most of the time, but even when he was healthy it wasn't pretty.

So let me get this straight. Chiarelli traded Eberle for Strome, then Strome for Spooner. And then waives Spooner within like 25 games of his arrival? Do I have that right? He turned Eberle into nothing? And is still employed, by the same people, for the same job??? How do I get a job with the Oilers???

..and then signs goalie Koskinen, with a grand total of 28 NHL games, to a 3 year $13.5M contract extension. He should have waited until near the season's end for a larger sample size to see if he is worth resigning. That is too long of term and $ for someone with only 28 NHL career starts who is unproven over the course of a full NHL season. In fact, his play is dropping off as the season progresses. He has been pulled 2x in his last seven starts! Since Christmas, his record is 3-5-0, .889 SV%, 3.89 GAA and 0 SO. That's worse than Cam Talbot's stats so far this year.

Chia has more lives than a cat.
