What the heck happened to goalies in this league? Coaches are getting fired left and right because their goalies can't make saves. Long-term contracts to ageing goalies are backfiring. Find an ECHL goalie off the scrap heap and ride him to a cup! Hockey keeps getting more and more analytical and scientific, yet goaltending remains a complete mystery.

Look at all the big name goalies struggling this year:

Lundqvist - .907 Save Pct
Price - .907
Fleury - .906 (coach fired)
Gibson - .905
Holtby - .899
Murray - .896
Quick - .896
Bobrovsky - .896
Rinne - .896 (coach fired)
Dubnyk - .891
Jones - .890 (coach fired)
Howard - .876

Gone is the big starter. It's all about the tandems now:

Bishop - .930, Khudobin - .932
Rask - .925, Halak - .919
Allen - .926, Binnington - .917
Greiss - .921, Varlamov - .919
Kuemper - .929, Raanta - .919

Feels like goaltending is as good as its ever been but maybe the margin for error against the shooters in this league now is so slim that any kind of getting off of your mental and positional game and you're slumping hard. Even a few years ago Jon Quick said that if you're reacting to the shot because you're not in the right position, you're done. The shots and releases are just that fast.

A few things:

1. Shooters are more adept than ever. Not only in terms of power and accuracy, but they can disguise their shots, none better than Auston Matthews.
2. The game has never been faster. Passes, skating, everything is moving so fast, a goalie can only react and get set so quickly.
3. Equipment changes are having the desired effect.

But ultimately I just don't see any generational talents in goal right now. There's no Patrick Roy, Marty Brodeur, or Dominator to be found at present. Of course, all three of those players had their prime seasons in the Dead Puck Era when you couldn't rifle an outlet pass across the red line and you could park an RV behind the net area, but I still think they were, era-adjusted, way better than the guys we see today.

Sticks are also so whippy a toddler can shoot like a cannon. NHLers using them is kind of unfair to goalies.

Hellebuyck is carrying a porous Jets team right now but hasn't quite broken through in the post season.

Stick technology has also changed the game as much as any other factor.

Shooters have adapted to the modern goalie style with time. While my team the Leafs is the extreme of it I think in the last few seasons there as been a noticeable move from d first structure and more chances being taken to create offense by many teams.

Anyway though I often feel in the majority but I like the high scoring softer game. I prefer scoring chances and speed over hits and fights. In fact I still think they allow too much stick work on the puck carrier and obstruction off the puck and no doubt I will be extremely disappointed come playoffs when the rules change.
