I keep reading there's a drop-off after 9, but I've also read the Habs would have no problem taking Jesperi Kotkaniemi at 3 and Hayton has a few strong backers.

Habs definitely need help down the middle. I suppose the big question in Montreal is whether Bergevin goes with best player available or drafts for position.

Sweet Jesus I hope not.

I'd rather trade Max to Fluffalo for Radar...

Or, trade Max for one of the Isles firsts and snag Velano.

Zadina and Velano?

that would be sweet.

Pohling as a second or third line centre...

Danault as our other second or third line centre...

bingo.

If they draft Tkachuk because of bloodlines, grit and North Americaness and miss on the actual franchise players, that would sum up the team's problems in a nutshell.

I will give up on the team for the next few years if this happens.

I think the Sens got screwed the most. They miss out on the highly-touted Top Three (unless Bergevin does something stupid, which is entirely possible) and won't have a first rounder to fall back on in 2019. And they could very well lose both Duchene and Karlsson for nothing at the end of next season.

They updated this mock draft to reflect the lottery results. No way Serron Noel drops that far, and I don't think the Avs pass on Ryan McLeod if he's available at 16.

While I've heard Veleno is very talented, I almost hope Snow (or whoever is the Isles GM by then) pulls a 2010 Snow- and drafts all D-men. They need them that badly.

Thank God For Balls! Flames pick for Hamonic was almost a damn disaster!

It kind of is one for the Isles. Although I think it was their actual pick that dropped to 11. The Flames pick stayed at 12.

Veleno would address the need for depth at C, which is a concern if you think Brock Nelson ain't the guy and a HUGE concern if you think John Tavares is leaving.

Their ball was in it for a bit. Poor Brad would have had his house burnt down! top 10 pick for Hamonic not a good deal in hindsight!

Scott Wheeler releases his final rankings.

https://theathletic.com/342459/2018/05/ ... prospects/

The Top Ten more or less looks set.

1. Dahlin (D)
2. Svechnikov (RW)
3. Zadina (LW)
4. Hughes (D, Jack's big brother for those who don't know)
5. Wahlstrom (C/RW)
6. Boqvist (D)
7. Bouchard (D)
8. Tkachuk (C/LW, I bet he goes higher than this)
9. Kotkaniemi (C/LW)
10. Farabee (LW)

That is, with a couple exceptions, the consensus top ten, though the order changes depending on who you ask. The next guy ranked in this article is Ryan Merkley, a smallish puckmoving defender who has everything you could possibly want in a dynamic blueliner...but has a bit of a rep as a headcase already. He will likely be the guy who falls in the draft the most.

Here is the full list, and you shouldn't need a subscription to view it.

I am a bit surprised he has both McIsaac and Denisenko ranked so low. I know they don't project as surefire guys by any means based on what I've read but I thought they were first rounders for sure.

One guy I'm hoping the Avs take is a Swiss player by the name of Nando Eggenberger. I don't know how good he is but that's damn near the best hockey name ever.

The top prospect in the QMJHL draft is named Hendrix Lapierre!

Anyways, this draft is starting to show some separation: Dahlin obvious 1, Svech and Zadina close to locks next. Then it splits into the remaining big defencemen: Hughes, Bouchard, Boqvist and the forwards with upside: Wahlstrom, Tkachuk, Kotkamieni. Teams might go by need at that point. That's kinda it.

Count me in the camp of people who think the Habs should consider trading down if they can nab two 1sts and get two centres from Veleno, Hayton, Lundestrom and Kotkamieni etc.

Zadina sounds great but the Habs have had the same problem for 20 years. Time to make a serious move to rectifying that.

If ever there was a draft to do it, it'd be this one.

Less than a month till the draft, and I'm starting to think the forwards will go early and the defencemen not named Rasmus might drop.

Carolina will likely take Svechnikov or Zadina, Habs will likely take the remaining of the two or Kotkaniemi. Ottawa feels like a Tkachuk destination, otherwise Arizona could take him.

Detroit seems like another forward-friendly spot (Wahlstrom?), which leaves Vancouver will their pick of dman. (Bouchard?)

I could see the Hawks and Rangers picks being in play, especially if Kotkaniemi drops.

If a Dobson or Hughes falls, they won't get past Edmo or Long Island. Stars get a centre (Hayton, Veleno or Kupari) and who knows after that.

So something like:

1. BUF - Dahlin
2. CAR - Svechnikov
3. MTL - Zadina
4. OTT - Tkachuk
5. ARI - Wahlstrom
6. DET - Kotkaniemi
7. VAN - Bouchard
8. CHI - Boqvist
9. NYR - Hughes
10. EDM - Dobson

There's rumblings now that Kotkaniemi may go 3rd overall instead of Zadina. :o I don't think he's gonna drop.

I will not be surprised if Merkley drops out of the first round entirely. I just read on Twitter he met with 24 teams and every single one of them questioned him about his attitude issues. Dude's gonna be the Johnny Manziel of hockey if he ain't careful.

It'd be great if Veleno dropped all the way to 16 so the Avs got him but I doubt that'll happen.

If the Habs think Zadina and Kotkaniemi and more or less equal, they'll opt for the centre, right?

I'm guessing so given the fervent need.

Someone on HF insists Timmins isn't high on Zadina at all. I didn't inquire further as to why said poster thinks so, but he's a guy who generally knows his stuff, so...
