Might as well get this started with preseason mere weeks away.

I think this will be the Oil's year to at least make the conference finals. Otherwise I think the cap has sanded everyone's edges a little. Fairly wide open.

Not sure I agree with the reasons given for the Isles, but I agree they're probably going to miss the playoffs. Again. Unless Snow pulls a rabbit out of his ass again during camp.

I'm still not convinced that Minnesota is truly a "contender" though this is probably as close as they'll be getting with the current group.

Other than that I'm pretty much in agreement.

So when do the fire sales start?

Buffalo and Arizona have to be giving up on this year soon, right?

And I keep checking different sets of standings to see if the VGK really are atop the west. WTF??? They're 4 points behind Tampa, but have 2 games in hand. They could actually win the President's Trophy. That's amazing and infuriating at the same time.

I'm still stunned we haven't seen one coach firing yet. No way that lasts into March.

I think it's because of a lack of available options. I think if one team fires their coach you might see a chain reaction. I also think Willie could get another shot after the Olympics.

Yup. That and the Oilers may yet get another top 5 pick...

They should be banned from it. The next CBA should include a clause that teams that almost purposely suck, despite having a billion top 5 picks on their roster, or traded away for dog shit, should not be allowed to pick in the top 5. It's embarrassing for everyone involved.

Been saying this for years about teams getting 1st overall picks, tank or no tank. If you get a 1st overall pick, you shouldn't be eligible to pick, now I'll say because of the lottery, in the top 3 for at least a few years.

What's stunning thus far is that no one has pulled the plug. No one. Some teams inching closer (we know BUF and ARZ are out of it, OTT is close, and NYR is contemplating blowing it up) but not even a last-ditch coach firing to try and save the season.

In terms of the almighty goal differential:

1. Lightning +49
2. Bruins +29
3. Knights +28 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
4. Jets +24 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
5. Kings +22

26. Habs -23
27. Canucks -28
28. Sens -32
29. Sabres -52
30. Coyotes -56

Contenders and pretenders right there.

There's a clear group of elite teams this season, goal differential-wise:

1. Tampa +56
2. Vegas +49
3. Boston +45
4. Winnipeg +44
5. Nashville +41
6. Toronto +35

They all added pieces at the deadline. These teams, and maybe the Pens, are your Cup contenders.

I like this stat. Nothing tells the team story like the goal diff.

So much bad blood between Nashville and Winnipeg right now. Really hoping they meet in the playoffs.
