Well, today's the big day for the bottom feeders. Kind of anti-climatic this as the last two years have been generational drafts.

There's been a lot of talk in the Vancouver media about whether the draft lottery under the current structure is fair and equitable for the team's who finish at the bottom of standings and whether is actually achieves the desired effect of preventing some monumental tank jobs like we've seen in the past.

This year the Av's have an 18% chance of landing the first pick, which is down 2% from last year where the Leafs had a 20% chance of landing Matthews. Makes you realize just how lucky the Leafs were last year. Wink wink.

1. Colorado Avalanche, 18.0%
2. Vancouver Canucks, 12.1%
T3. x-Vegas Golden Knights, 10.3%
T3. Arizona Coyotes, 10.3%
5. New Jersey Devils, 8.5%

Vancouver's odds of landing each picks are as follows:

1. 12.1%
2. 11.8%
3. 11.3%
4. 34%
5. 30.7%

The whole process seems fishy - I want to see the actual draft being selected with the bingo balls etc. I don't want baldy locks Daly coming out with the cards in sealed envelopes. Smells like a scam. It also seems like the bottom placed teams should have at least sightly higher odds of landing a top 3 pick.

But the kicker is that nobody, except for the NHL, has access to the actual lottery process, all GM's and Presidents are totally sequestered -- which is odd.

So Vancouver's combined chance of getting the 1 or 2 or 3 is about equal to their chance of getting the 4th pick? That seems harsh. I know a lot of people are opposed to tanking, but there is a reason organizations choose that route. So they don't end up perpetually sucking for 10+ years. It's perceived to be a shorter path to returning to being a competitive team. This many not work out so well for the NHL when they get teams that suck for a decade and the fan base really abandons them.

Lots of movement in this year's draft. One of the most unlikely outcomes in the history of draft lotteries. Go figure.

2017 NHL draft Order:

1. NJ
2. PHI
3. DAL
4. COL
5. VAN
6. LVK
7. ARI
8. BUF
9. DET
10. FLA
11. LA
12. CAR
13. WPG
14. TB
15. NYI

NJ wins with less than 9% chance of hitting number 1. Even more surprising is the Flyers with a 2.2.% chance of breaking into the top 3 and they do it!

I like the Lottery, particularly with the cap system in place. After what happened with McDavid I understand how they don't want another tankathon of that years caliber next time a remarkable talent is on the draft horizon.

The Avs have a 1st and two 2nds that should be prime. Winning lottos is helpful but you need to draft well with all the other picks if you want out of the hole.

pffft............SC champs are made with elite talent. Half of them come in the first three picks.

Well, the Avs have a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd overall currently playing on the roster. Only fitting they get a 4th.

I agree that Cup Champs are built on top picks, but the Avs have had enough that they should be able to have built a contender based on the top picks they've already gotten. Hounsy's right--you gotta hit on something other than just your high first rounders, and the Avs up until recently were absolutely horrid with drafting and developing talent that wasn't gift-wrapped for them. It's almost as if that really good 2009 draft that yielded Duchene, O'Reilly, and Barrie was harmful in the long term because it masked those underlying problems.

Overall, I think the Avs continue to be far, far too insular, though they're not the merry band of Lacroix cronies they used to be. But there comes a time when the ideas have all dried up, and it's time for some fresh blood from outside the organization. They kinda/sorta bucked their usual trend by bringing in Chris McFarland from Columbus to be Assistant GM, but IMO it's not enough.

Burnaby Joe was looking pretty rough at the Draft Lottery. NHL Management jobs are far more stressful job than they need to be. It's not rocket science - it's hockey afterall. But then again, it's probably not the job itself - but the public scrutiny that drains all humanity and practical sensibility from the man.
