I would assume it would be the opposite: Seattle and Houston pay 600M each to get in, while the poorer QC franchise gets Phoenix, who will soon find themselves on the wrong side a West-heavy conference misalignment.

Of course we could get 34 teams, with KC, Portland and Virginia Beach emerging as potential spots for troubled teams.

Gah...that would be so weird for the franchise to go from Winnipeg to Arizona to Quebec City.

Canes sold today, so they're staying in Raleigh. As bad as things get there and Sunrise, they still have sweet barn deals so I doubt the NHL will leave those spots.

If Glendale and Brooklyn don't resolve themselves, then they'll be on thin ice. I think the latter will get sorted -- too much land money involved not to -- but as the league looks to get into strong markets like Houston and Seattle, the need to prop up Phoenix makes less and less sense.

From Pierre LeBrun's Twitter:

Bettman announces that the NHL Board of Governors has agreed to accept/consider an expansion application from Seattle and allow Bonderman group to conduct a season ticket drive

My excitement has now turned to dread with a smidge of annoyance. Now teams have to prepare for another expansion draft, and the Avs were actually fortuitous in that they not only had a bunch of crappy players no one wanted, but they managed to pick up a defenseman (Mark Barberio) that fulfilled their obligation without having to do any extra maneuvering. But they're set to get absolutely jobbed in the next one.

Oh well...it's a few years yet.

Seeing how well Vegas is doing to this point (standings- no idea on ticket sales), Seattle may have pretty decent sales before they exist.

From Wysh:

Quote:
The Seattle Kraken? According to Internet sleuth Clark Rasmussen of DetroitHockey.net, it's a possible team name if the NHL expands to Seattle. Rasmussen was one of the first to discover "Golden Knights" as a potential name for the NHL's Vegas team through domain registration tracking. On Friday, he identified 13 names registered by the general counsel at Oak View Group, whose refurbishment of Seattle's Key Arena could have it ready for an NHL team in 2020-21. Those names: The Seattle Cougars, Eagles, Emeralds, Evergreens, Firebirds, Kraken, Rainiers, Renegades, Sea Lions, Seals, Sockeyes, Totems and Whale. The bad news: No Sasquatch. The good news: endless "Release The Kraken!" headline puns.

I'd buy that jersey. Still thinking about buying a Boogie Knights sweater when I have the funds.

Seattle's mayor approves: https://twitter.com/MayorJenny/status/9 ... 4134403072

Sounds like they'll be ready for 2020-21.

They really ought to stay at 32 teams. I hate this different number of teams in divisions bullshit.

The only fear I have of a 34-team league is that they'll go with purely divisional playoffs and that would be a travesty. It's kind of a travesty now because of the uneven number of teams and HUGE imbalance between divisions in terms of team strength. Someone, (Wyshynski?) proposed a conference-only format, where seeding has absolutely nothing to do with divisions. Either way, getting rid of the Wild Card would be kinda stupid IMO.

I think spots 1-7 should be "real" playoff spots, and then 8 & 9 should be the "wild cards", with a 1-game play-in, and then they have to travel to team #1's arena for a game the next night. That way they'd be at a real disadvantage for game 1, which the #1 team deserves vs a wild card team. Stats would count toward the playoffs, not regular season.

Portland playing the domain name game: http://news.sportslogos.net/2018/06/19/ ... nterhawks/

Vegas is a hit and Seattle is next. After that, the league might start looking at teams 33-34 in Houston and Portland. Of course, Quebec is always around.
