Looking forward to resuming the battle of Quebec at two pro levels: Quebec v Montreal in the NHL, Trois-Rivieres v Laval in the AHL.

Hey, at 32 teams we can add another round of playoffs altogether!

I am fine with a team in Quebec City ever so long as they don't try to put Detroit back into that goddamn Western Conference again. Go dick Columbus.

32 teams and you've got half a March Madness.

Missed out on this, a very detailed case for hockey in Houston: http://www.defendingbigd.com/2015/6/29/ ... ity-Quebec

I would agree - big market, some well documented hockey history at semi pro level, a rink and loads of dosh. Seems much smoother than Seattle.

So what you're saying is, Bettman is working on 32 more expansion teams today? $16 billion in expansion fees!!! Woohoooooooooooooo!

We're on to the lightning round: Vegas and Quebec will make their pitches to league execs on Tuesday http://slam.canoe.com/Slam/Hockey/NHL/2 ... !%20hockey

Then expect them to hem and haw till December. Christmas gifts for QC and LV hockey fans.

Quite a bit of talk about the Habs wanting a payout from QC. It won't affect ticket sales (the cities are three hours apart), but there are a few province-wide sponsors (insurance, mostly) they may have to fight over.

Jeremy Jacobs sounds off, makes it seem like the maybe the other owners aren't too keen on adding teams.

Quote:
"Take a look at what’s gone up in Nevada -- it’s scary. I mean, it really is. It’s a heck of an arena built there, and there’s a strong interest there," Jacobs said. "Balance the fact, Quebec has a great hockey interest, [but] it’s an extraordinarily small market."

Quote:
I’d love to see us in the West to be up in Seattle. Seattle’s a natural, and I would love to see one in Houston, but we can’t get into that building. There are conditions and circumstances in each one of these that we have to take into consideration."

No decision on expansion at the upcoming board of governors meeting.

http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=786371

I get the feeling the owners might not be as keen on slicing the pie 32 ways as previously thought.

Virginia Beach, once in the running for a team back in the 90's, is finally getting an 18,000-seat arena. A privately funded one, at that.

http://nhl.nbcsports.com/2015/12/11/vir ... -nhl-team/

I think it would be a great spot for NBA expansion, to be honest.

Interesting article about how Ray Bartoszek's Tukwila arena plans were hatched to get Seattle to finally move on a downtown arena.

http://www.seattletimes.com/sports/hock ... ena-cause/

Really looks like the NHL will do what it can to secure teams in Seattle and Las Vegas.

Bettman directs vaguely threatening new arena talk at Calgary. Nenshi tells the dweeb to eff off

I guess word on the street is the Coyotes will be kicked out of Glendale at the end of the season and will move to Las Vegas, hence the lack of movement on expansion.

Ex VAN assistant GM Laurence Gilman was retained by NHL to help come up with potential expansion draft scenarios/procedures/rules.

Expansion draft potential. Each team has option of protecting 3d, 7F and I goalie or 8 skaters +1 goalie. Expansion determined before draft

GM's told expansion decision expected before June draft. If expand by 1 team, each team loses 1 player...if two teams, 2 players.

3d! Goodbye Greg Pateryn!

Questions to be addressed - Are those from 23-man roster? 50-contract limit? When is the roster set? Are NMC automatically included in those #'s? Status of buried contracts? Players with waiver-protection on the roster at end of season - teams claim they are in the minors so not protected?

Still, that's enough that nearly everyone won't be able to only expose their bad contracts.

Oh thank fucking christ that Jimmy only has a NTC, not a NMC. If NMC counted against the limit and Jimmy had one...bye bye Mrazek.

Datsyuk the only Wing with a NMC.

Avs might have a tough call to make since I imagine they want to protect both their goalies

So if the new team gets to select 1 player from each team, that'll give them 30 players, but they still have a 23 man roster. Do they get an exemption to send players to the AHL without waivers so they can have a farm system? Or if they waive those players to send them down, do the teams those players were claimed from get 1st chance at reclaiming them? Or can the expansion team trade them in a package deal? (I would imagine so since they are their property) This brings up lots of interesting possibilities.

A team made up entirely of 3rd liners & 4-6 d-men, and 2 backup (or 1A type) goalies might not be all that bad, and would be cap friendly.

Would this expansion draft take place before or after July 1st? Would suck to sign a guy who will strengthen your center depth and then lose him, but I guess that's the whole point, because no UFA worth his weight in salt is going to sign with an expansion team even if they overpay.

Fun note- this team could easily wind up with a former #1 overall from the Oilers, who won't be able to protect them all soon.
