This is sort of an asshole thing for Damien Cox to do the moment the guy announces his retirement:

After spending years reading about the Leafs in the Sun & Star, I guess something like this could be expected.

I don't know; the video tribute was not inaccurate. As great a player as he was, the Leafs were just never able to build enough of a team around him to get to the SCF - that's not his fault - it doesn't diminish the player that he was - I think it was a nice tribute.

But, if you'd prefer this as an alternative:

Okay, so his time here was overpriced, and far too short, but I kind of agree with this thesis.

If nothing else he should be given credit for not completely screwing over the team's cap situation.

To be fair, Butch, this is something Cox said a year ago, the Star is just re-posting it now. And really...what did he say that was off-base? He was complimentary of Sundin's play and character but I think he's dead-on when he says Leafs fans just never embraced him like they did Gilmour or Clark...hell, I don't even think he was even as popular as Domi or Tucker was either.

Oh! Didn't realize the Cox column was dated. I was thinking that he had just put that out the morning the guy announces his retirement & has to point out essentially that he wasn't the Captain/embraced the way Clark or Gilmour were. True of course, but just thought the timing was off for a statement like that should have this been a new column he ran.

Maybe I'm just sensitive right now, as my Sundin sweater has become a bit snug.
