I should know this, but don't.

Recently a few games have had minors at the same time for each team. I always considered those to be coincidental penalties and figured they'd cancel out, so 5 on 5 continues and the players serve their 2 minutes + time until a whistle frees them. But a few games recently have had such penalty "pairs" if you will, and resulted in 4 on 4 for a true 2 minutes, then both players were released directly into play.

Is the difference something like the 2 penalties were truly coincidentals, like roughing penalties vs each other?

Thanks for any info/help.

Sounds like it goes to 4-on-4 when the two players, one from each team, are the only ones penalized. When there are multiple penalized players from each team, then they'll coincidental and cancel each other out in terms of number of players on the ice.

I'm pretty sure this is different in the men's league I play in. I think they just keep it 5-on-5 when its just one from each team, but shit its been over a year now since I played.

But so many times everyone seems to question if it's 4 on 4 or 5 on 5.
