and who has room for Marner's cap hit? I think Nylander is the easier move.

Not the year.

Hear me out: Leafs trade Matthews and Nylander to the Jets for Hellebuyck and Dubois. All pending UFAs, so it gives them a chance to run it back one more time. Leafs get an elite goalie to ride and possibly re-sign, the Jets get one year of a potential 60 goal scorer before embarking on a rebuild. It's crazy, but I'm putting it out there.

on the plus side, it sounds like Dubois wants to hit FA and choose his own adventure, so Winnipeg will be looking to move him. On the negative side Winnipeg would have to pick up $5 million more in salary. I think Toronto would have to add a good prospect or high draft pick to make this work.

Oh shit, I eagerly await Sean McIndoe's breakdown of Shanny's presser because it sure sounds like he's pretty pissed. This doesn't sound like it was an amicable parting at all.

Dubas in my mind is an elite-level GM, I'll just leave my thoughts about him at that for now. Dude will find another front office gig when he wants one.

Again, this move has some real-world implications beyond just us being fans, so this news hits a little different than the normal shuffling of the guard we see in sports.

The Leafs are in a tough spot. They want an experienced GM, but who's available? They probably need to move one of their big four, but how do you recoup value?

I've heard Bergevin mentioned, which would sink morale in Toronto to an all-time low, but if you want a guy who'll break up your star corps, shake things up in a hurry, and hope things turn around, he would certainly do that.

I read the other day that Tavares won't waive his NMC because he loves being there. The other 3 of the big 4 don't have NTCs or NMCs according to Capfriendly. So it'll have to be one or more of them who goes. The 5 year old Isles fan joke of Matthews will go home to AZ doesn't exactly look like one of those jokes that turns to fruition considering the state of the Coyotes. Unless Matthews really wants to be seen as a franchise savior. Or has good insight to where they'll move to.

Listened to the 32 Thoughts breakdown, people are quite stunned that, not only has this happened, but that Shanahan was very public about the discourse.

This is already looking like a shitshow.

Sure sounds like the odds-on favorite to take over is Brad Trelving.

I'm not sure who I would hire, but I am certain it would not be Brad Trelving.

I think if I owned the team I'd fire the President, then hire someone from the NBA. The President doesn't have to know hockey, they have to know people and culture and organization. They have to figure out who does have the skills and hire them. Presidents of major corporations switch to completely different industries and no one ever bats an eye saying an automobile guy can't figure out how to manage telecom.

Perhaps who ever is the Assistant GM of San Antonio Spurs. That is an incredibly well run organization.

Might as well give us Marner and take Markstrom and Hannafin too! Brad is ok but wouldn't be my first choice in Toronto.....that's a big step up from Calgary. But I guess he did the best he could when everyone was leaving town there...so there is that. I like Foggs suggestion.

Yeah, I wouldn't say Treliving was a terrible GM but I certainly would not call him great either.
