Quote:
Those who are into analytics have been trumpeting Spezza's poor Corsi numbers all season long as tangible proof of his declining skills.

After Monday night's loss, where Spezza failed to clear the puck out of his own zone, many fans who aren't into advanced stats said they had reached their breaking point with the captain. We were bombarded with "Trade Spezza" e-mails and calls and there seemed like a growing distaste for his style of play in Ottawa.

One of the most common complaints I heard from fans is that Spezza needs to earn his $7 million salary.

But what fans need to remember about Spezza is that his contract is set up very favorably for next season. While he carries a cap hit of $7 million, he will actually only get paid $4 million in actual money for the 2014-15 campaign. (Spezza is being paid $5 million this season as his front-loaded contract starts to decline).

And for a team like Ottawa that is desperate to reach the salary cap floor, this contract is an absolute dream. For next season, the Sens are getting $3 million of salary cap space eaten up for nothing. If the Sens were a spend-to-the-cap team, this deal would be an issue for them, but the exact opposite is true and that is why I would expect the Senators to hang onto their captain. He gives them $7 million of salary cap space for the price of $4 million.

And now ask yourself this important question: Would you pay Jason Spezza $4 million to play next season?

Of course you would.

In a world where the oft-injured Martin Havlat will be making $6 million next season and Mike Ribeiro will be making $5.5 million, Spezza is absolutely a bargain at $4 million in real dollars. He won't even rank among the top 50 forwards in salary next season.

As his salary is lowered, perhaps the expectations on Spezza could follow suit. He is 30 years old and no longer surrounded by snipers like Dany Heatley and Daniel Alfredsson. But at $4 million dollars next season, Jason Spezza will be worth every penny that he is paid.

Fuck it I like this guy.

I don't know who is advocating he's done. It's pretty obvious that the guy who is done is Michalek on the Sens and that while Spezza may be behind Turris on the depth chart he's definitely not a slouch. The Sens need another winger somewhere, as MacArthur and Ryan are tied to Turris and Zibanejad I guess must be with Spezza.

There are financial issues but with the way that contract is structured yeah, the Sens better hang onto their captain. His contract makes more sense to them than it would for potential suitors, who might want to send an inferior player signed long term to the Sens in return.

All in all, Mendes is bang on here. Spezza doesn't have to be worth $7m for the Sens to want to keep him. He just has to be worth $4m.

Too many fans think the players drafted first/second overall in every draft must be a generational talent. One reason why Joe Thornton was effectively run out of Boston. They may have recovered nicely, but most can agree they didn't get anywhere near equal value for that trade.

I hope Buffalo fans or whoever the hell else snags poor Sam Reinhart don't crush him with ridiculously unrealistic expectations.

Had to compare that with the draft lists. Hoo boy there were some busts. Forgot about E.L.'s boy Svitov, as well as Shaoeone Morrrisssonnn.

And Sens fans who want him gone have short memories. They seem to forget they snagged the pick that landed Spezza AND Zdeno Chara for Alexei fucking Yashin. I guess they'd rather have him back than Spezza.

Believe me, if the Isles fans could go back in time & keep that pick & Chara, and never obtain Yashin, we would, ten gabillion times over. I'd take Spezza & Chara on the downsides of their careers over Yashin, ever.

You forgot about Svitov, Av? Well, good news! You'll be watching him play for the next couple of weeks! Svitov is Russia's Rob Zamuner moment.

If you check out how I introduce this article on the EOTP main page, it's titled "Under Pressure: Russia hosts hockey's best". Yes, I deliberately referenced a classic rock duet sung by an openly gay man and a straight man who once claimed to be bisexual in my preview of Russia's hockey team.

I wouldn't want to mess with a coach named Zinetula Bilyaletdinov.

Jason Spezza is a PPG player in his NHL career, which is mind boggling to me. Not very durable, though.

Lots of reports that Spezza has played his final game as a Senator. I expect St. Louis or Anaheim to be the frontrunners for him if this is indeed true. Unless Spezza is willing to accept a trade to a non-contender like Nashville, Winnipeg or Edmonton (unlikely).

Spezza for Phaneuf would be pretty fun, though.

Fun for the Leafs for sure.

Looks like the Spezza era in Ottawa is coming to an end.

Any player who can maintain a PPG career pace is pretty damn good. He's not a perfect player by any means, but he'll get points.

I assume Karlsson will be the next captain?
