Might as well have something specific for this potential team.

Quote:
He said that if he were granted a team he would ultimately hold a naming contest, as one does, but as an Army man he personally leans toward calling the franchise the Black Knights. (One of Fidelity’s underlying companies is Black Knight Financial Services.)

Ew. Although just 'Las Vegas Knights' has a fun pun going for it.

Rick Tocchet as head coach. Tomas Vanek a sure bet to sign there.

I'd even just drop the Las. Vegas Knights.

Janet Jones to head up the Ice Girls? Or a PR gig?

And really- the Black Knights? I can only hope the play-by-play announcer yells "None shall pass!" when their D rub someone out along the boards. "'Tis only a flesh wound" should be played on the Jumbotron whenever there's a potential injury to a home player...

Black Knights is still light years better than "Wild."

Totally agree.

And hell, Islanders is a pretty dumb name.
The "Rangers" is a decent name, except when you consider they play in Manhattan, which never had a range or a ranger to patrol it. Then it's really stupid.

You know the story behind the Rangers' name, right?

I don't really have a problem with any team names in the NHL at present, Minnesota aside. I HATED "Avalanche" when it was first announced, but given the possible alternative, I shut up pretty quick.

Yep, Tex's Rangers. Makes it even worse in my opinion.

What was the Avs alternative? Never heard it.

Charlie Lyons, the then-new owner of the former Quebec Nordiques, openly suggested "Rocky Mountain Extreme." It was met with such derision that they quickly announced "Colorado Avalanche" soon thereafter. Lyons, and his company, Ascent Entertainment, sold the Avs just a few years later I believe to Stan Kroenke. No one really misses them.

Rocky Mountain Oysters... Rocky Mountain High... yeah. That's pretty awful.

Las Vegas is a mediocre TV market. Like, 40th best in the US shitty. Only Buffalo is a smaller one. Las Vegas has a certain international cachet, though.

If you want that sweet TV money, Seattle Metropolitans and Portland Rosebuds are still the way to go. Try convincing Chris Hansen and Paul Allen, though.

If the Chargers leave for LA, I can imagine the NBA and NHL will be vying for San Diego.

I read that Les Alexander has exclusive rights on the Toyota Center in Houston, and lost interest in the NHL after getting rebuffed a couple of times. It explains why we don't hear about Houston as an expansion candidate even though it's a huge market. The Aeroes moved mostly because TC was an expensive arena to rent for minor league hockey.

Kansas City? Meh. Newport News? Hellz no.

I have a soft spot for Hartford, but it ain't happening.

In Canada: QC, TO, with Hamilton and Kitchener in case TO 2.0 doesn't work out.

Ya know, if this drags on a few years, Atlanta might creep its way back into the picture...

Kitchener/Waterloo no way. People complain about the distance to Ottawa and Phoenix barns? Hoooly...You'd need a lot of desperate Leaf fans willing to make an hour+ trek. London is a huge OHL market, but still an hour away. Larger cities are 45min to 1 hour away. Only 300k people in Kitchener/Waterloo area too.

The Vegas expansion fee could cost 450-500M.

Can you imagine what they will try to charge for a Toronto expansion fee? And what Toronto will try to get for compensation?

Two straight wins?
A taker for Clarkson?
A taker for Dion?
A legit #1 goalie for 2 1Bs?

Well, the NHL won't be in Vegas soon, but we will be. I have to sit through a damned NKOTB concert (but TLC will be one of the opening acts, so I'm okay with that at least) but it'll be the first time I've been in Vegas since, I believe, Cali's bachelor party.
